I site mine at 100 yards, I have used the same shotgun set up for years and know by heart where it hits form 25 to 100 yards. Just site it at 100, fire it at 25, 50 and 75 yards to see where it hits. If you site it at 50 yards, the drop at 100 is sufficient to miss or wound an animal.
Good hunting

100 yards would be good, but after zeroing at 100, shoot a few at 20, 50, and 75 yards to see what your slugs will do at those different ranges. The last deer I shot was at 70 yards and the on before that was at 30 - so you need to be able to make a good clean kill shot at all distances. A slug is a big chunk of lead, and at close ranges it will not drop very much, but out at farther ranges it will lose energy and drop much more. The difference between 20 and 50 yards might not be enough to worry about, but the difference between 75 and 100 could be significant. Just get out and shoot your shotgun to find out what it does.

Best advise I can provide here is to measure the area your going to hunt to determine what distance you are likely to shoot at. Then sight your shotgun at that range. Once sighted for your max range, do test shots every 25 yards and evaluate your rise or drop and record it and get familiar with these impact points so you know how much drop you can expect and aim accordingly at all the possible ranges you might encounter hunting there.
This is not only important for you to know for your own knowledge, but also to assist you in making a clean kill should you have the opportunity to shoot.
Get accurate and good luck!

i have the same rem 870 but just with a smooth bore and improved Cly. choke i shoot 3" rifled slugs with a scope at 100 yards i hit a good group so i would sight it at 100 then try going down from there. were i hunt the long shot i would be able to take is only about 75 yards. so i don't need a high powered rifle. i love my 870 its good for everything from small to big game

I got mine sighted for 50 yards, a slug starts to drop after that. Then target practise and figure out how much hire to raise your gun for 75 - 100 yards

Sight in at 50 yards first then see where it impacts at 75 yards & then again at 100 yards.*
