Unless the knee injury took place during her time in training, it isn't the Army's responsibility. A knee is not an ankle; although the two injuries could be related, it would appear that the knee problem was not apparent before her discharge. Only veterans (i.e. those who have completed a term of service) get medical care after leaving the service.

As regards drug use - the Army will at least sometimes take people who *used* to use drugs but are clean and have avoided criminal prosecution. If they know about your past and take you anyway, they can't use it against you later. OTOH if you conceal past use from them, or continue using drugs, they tend to not take it kindly.

Your stepsister probably knows more about the situation than anyone else you can contact easily; and if she's not being completely honest with you it might be hard to piece the facts together.

If your sister was injured in the military then they would normally take care of that injury and any costs associated with it.

If she was discharged on a medical discharge then any surgeries needed would have been taken care of, but most discharged medically is because they cannot recover from the illness or injury.

If she was discharged because of drugs and did not serve 180 days she's on her own.

If she received a dishonorable , she is on her own.

And don't take this as gospel because You really left a lot open to interpretation.

It all depends on a lot of variables. You would have to determine the reasoning for her discharge and if she was deemed to have a service connected disability. It might also be related to the short period of time she was actually in the military. Your family should be able to contact the VA to determine if there is anything they can do for her.

She hurt her ankle Why did she have knee surgery? If it was not service related, they will not pay.
