How do stop items starting on start up? In particular Yahoo Messenger always starts on start up and I'd like to select it when I want it. So please advise how to stop all items that are not wanted starting on start up - hope this makes sense so sorry if it doesn't?

Start>Run>type in MSCONFIG>Startup tab - uncheck any program you don't want to run when you start Windows

Open messenger and click on the "messenger" option in the top menu...then choose preferences and select general, there's a check box you can "untick" for Y! start up on boot.

Google Hijackthis. It's a nifty little program that shows what boots at startup and gives the option to stop it from starting. Be very careful though.

Yeah, that makes sense!

The easiest way for the novice is to head to:

Start > Run > msconfig > Startup (Tab).

All the entries listed in there are programs that run when your pc starts.

Just uncheck any you can live without running on startup & hit 'Apply'.

Job done!
