Long term antibiotics for kidney infections?
I had a 5mm kidney stone back in May, I had alot of problems with it, the stone went but I had a infection were the stone had been inside me for so long. I was put on different antibiotics I was home for about a 8 weeks, I was told to rotate the antibiotics cause I was having problems shifting the infection. I am still having pain in the kidney area, it feels like a slight burning sensation, I am scared cause I do not want the pain to get worse, cause I know how bad it can be, I am still taking the antibiotics, they seem to work for a few days but by the time I have finished them, I am in pain again. I have been to see a doctor and he said it can take a while to completely get rid of a kidney infection. Is he right is this normal? What I want to know is, can it take a few months for the infection to clear up, and could the antibiotics be harming my kidneys, because I have taken so many? Does anyone have any answers for me, thank you.

Its not uncommon for people to develop chronic or recurring kidney infections - the condition is called pyelonephritis if you want to look it up. It commonly takes several different antibiotics and a long period of time to get rid of this type of infection. Sometimes, surgery is needed to fix the problem that is causing the infection; however, surgery is not generally performed while a person still has the infection, except in an emergency. Treatment can be more effective if the doctors take a culture to determine the type of bacteria or fungus causing the infection. If you are seeing a general physician, it might be a good idea to switch to a specialist (urologist or nephrologist).

Do not worry about kidney damage from the antibiotics - just be careful to follow the instructions, particularly the ones related to intake of fluids and interactions with other drugs. The risks from the infection are enormously greater than the risks from the antibiotics.

Are you sure you dont have more stones that may be causing you this pain, I was having the same problems and was found to have 14 stones on my right kidney and 4 on the left. I have already passed about 3 and still have pains. I cant answer your question on the antibiotics as I do not take them. Good luck in getting well.

Kidney infections can hang around, and take a while to clear up, especially as it seems you might be prone to stones. /all I can say, is go back to your G.P., but in the meantime, keep up your fluid intake. Drink plenty of water during the day.
