Your cat is just being a cat. It is not misbehaving. It is instinct to catch mice and birds. Your cat doesn't know the budgie is a pet. No matter how many times you smack her, she won't stop. She has no idea why you are behaving this way when she is bringing you a gift. That's what cats do. She probably kills more mice to bring to you to try to please you because you keep smacking her. No, you cannot safely muzzle a cat. As for your dog, he shouldn't be forced to wear a muzzle all the time. I had a German Shepherd for 15 years, and she never once was muzzled. I had cats at the same time, and believe it or not, they got along. They slept on the same sofa. What needs to happen is you need to train and discipline your dog, firmly but with affection (watch the dog whisperer on Nat'l Geographic). He can learn that you don't want him to attack the cat or anybody else if you are consistent. You'll just have to accept that the cat will behave like a cat. You should make sure your bird is always out of reach of the cat. Why do you think they make cat toys with feathers on them? Cats naturally like to chase them. I suggest you consult a professional animal trainer. If you can't handle all of it, choose the pet you want to keep and find good homes for the other two.

It sounds like you have real troubles training your animals and they are aggressive. A well-trained dog never has to wear a muzzle, no matter what kind of dog it is. I've got a 120-pound Lab and a 75 pound German Shepherd mix, and they live in our house with a cat, and none of them have ever been muzzled. Keeping a dog muzzled all the time just makes it more aggressive.
And you shouldn't be smacking your cat really hard. That's animal abuse. If your cat is doing something it shouldn't be, spray it with cold water from a water bottle, NEVER HIT IT.
If you hang your budgie's cage from a hook on the ceiling, the cat won't be able to get it.
And the cat is bringing mice home because she wants you to praise her and be proud of her. They bring things like that home to show them off, not to punish people. To a cat, it's a really cool thing that she's caught that mouse, and she wants praised for it, not smacked really hard loads of times.
What are you going to do when the budgie sings too loudly? Smack it too?

In bringing dead mice home, your cat is bringing you presents. However distasteful it is for you, you should never hit your cat. It is cruel and unfair. As for the budgie, it is like you standing outside the window of a sweetie shop. If you could get in, wouldn't you want to eat the sweets? The cat sees your budgie as food. The poor budgie is probably scared being constantly hunted. Keep the budgie where the cat can't get anywhere near it.

your cat is following her natural instincts, which is to hunt. when she brings home the mice, its a gift for YOU the top cat in her life. she wants your budgie because of the same reason she wants the mouse. i have birds and cats and i am glad to say, the cats pay NO mind to my 30+ birds. what you have is a cat you allow outdoors and not allowing her out will stop your mouse problem. if you keep your budgie hanging from the ceiling in an area the cat cant reach, that would solve that problem. put the budgie where the cat cant possibly land and youll ALL be ok

From what I've read, a domesticated housecat exhibits traits of both mama cat and kitten. Mama cats will bring food to their kittens to show them about hunting. Your cat is bringing food to you, her "kittens" to show you about hunting.
What the heck is WRONG with you that you would smack your cat? Good gravy! And there are no bad dogs, just bad owners. You should take your dog to an obedience class. Making him wear the muzzle all the time is just cruel. Dogs and cats can get along if you work at it.

You should be grateful your cat brings dead mice home, rather than having an invasion of mice in your home. It is natural instinct for your cat to attact your budgie. I think you should have thought more carefully about the food chain before acquiring your pets. Your dog should not be muzzled all the time, choose which pet you really want and find loving homes for the others.

First of all, smacking a cat never works. For that matter, you should not smack someone or something if you want to get it or them to do what you want. Cats are hunters by instinct. This can not be changed. They are not like dogs. Your cat is actually trying to please you by bringing home it's kill to you. Cats hunt small animals--that's what they do. Try not allowing the cat to go out, and keep your bird in it's cage. Sounds to me like you have too many animals that were not meant to live together. Cats love to eat birds, and dogs love to chase cats. Good luck, and stop smacking animals!

As far as i know, they don't make muzzles for cats, besides, no animal should have to wear one, its in humain, and as for smacking your cat, that won't do anything, and it's considered animal creulty.I suggest, keeping it inside, it works. But if your cat is trying to get at your Budgie, keep it in a seperate room, with the door shut, i did this to keep my cats away from my gerbils, and it worked.

Your kitty is bringing you presents and showing you what a mighty hunter she is. As for the budgie- well, the budgie looks like food to her, and your kitty does sound very much like a hunter. About all I can suggest there is to keep the budgie in a room where your cat isn't allowed to go.
