The books of Daniel and Revelation use "beasts" as symbols for kingdoms, countries. The first beast of Revelation 13 represents the Papal power. The Vatican is a small country. In the Dark Ages, the Papal power ruled the then known world. The church wielded the power of the state to enforce her dogmas. Death was the penalty for all dissenters. If you take a look at the second beast of Revelation 13 it is said that this beast will make an image to the first beast. This beast represents the United States of America. When the churches in America shall unite and bring pressure upon the government to enforce their religious dogmas through legal enactments, she will have made an image to the papacy.

Today all can see that this is where it is leading. Undeniably, the leaders of the Christian Right movement are getting more and more involved in the political arena.

This is the sign that Revelation 13 will soon be fulfilled.

When I was studying Revelation, I was told that in the times that Revelation was written, the writers used "beast" to describe governments.

If we are to assume that the writer of revelation was referring to specific governments, your guess would be as good as mine to which two he was referring to.

The old testament, and the new testament.

Seriously, I'm not joking one bit. Everyone is looking for a person, or a government. And when you realize that Revelation is talking about itself, you're going to smack yourself in the head and say, 'why was I thinking all that nonsense...'
