When cats are kittens they are carried around by their mother from the neck. When she has them in this hold they go very limp and relax. When a cats human rubs or massages the neck they feel as though mom has them in her grasp again.

Cats like to have their necks rubbed for the same reason people enjoy being massaged. Rubbing stimulates nerves to produce mood-elevating, relaxing endorphins.

I've 4 cats at home.. used to have 13..
Weneva i reach home, jus b4 i open e door & enter, all of my cats will "fall in" jus to great me, & i've to pat every single one of em, esp e neck!!
Correct me if i'm wrong, but i'm pretty sure we humans love our necks to b caressed & even licked.. (could b juz me..)
Coz its tickleish in a very pleasent sort of way!
I assume cats feel e same way, also, it will lift it's head up HIGH- eye's closed & purr! If u think about it, e kitty mayb smiling to show it's aprreciation 2 u!
Try givin e cat a light massage on its back.. It'l love it!
Great bonding!
Oh yeah, jus remember, wen u rub e kaT's neck, it'l tend to lift its head all e way up to e back.. Pitty e poor kitty s u would not wan it 2 strain its neck!!
