This could be a sign of a thyroid condition. See your vet and talk to them about the possibility of testing him.

Do you have more details? It would be helplful to know what breed of dog you have, how it he/she is, if he/she is neutered, what food you feed and how much, and lastly, how much exercise it gets? Any of these can affect weight gain - a spayed/neutered dog is more prone to weight gain, and obviously exercise plays a large part of it. Could just be down to the food though, might not agree with your dog. Lastly, it might also be an illness, and if there are any other symptoms, you should get in contact with your vet.

Gaining weight in dogs is the same in humans. If the calories IN are greater than the calories burned each day, your dog will gain weight. Your dog is getting calories from somewhere. Do some snooping around.
