what county in California ?
laws are different in diffident areas
Kern is OK for guns LA hates guns for example
basically go to a local gun shop and ask - that's it
don't buy from the Internet if you can help it. you need to register paper work anyway and the gun needs to be sold THROUGH a dealer anyway gun shops tend to be lower- tech
so open the yellow pages and just call. they get questions about this stuff all the time. If they are rude or not happy to answer questions GO TO SOMEONE ELSE like any business.
stormtrooper8989 is RIGHT on the money
21 and over
waiting period
no Concealed weapons without a permit ( granted by the COUNTY not the state)
no felons
also the pistol can't carry more than 10 round in the magazine
(our state limits new sales of magazines to 10 round)

A reputable dealer ( the best way to go ) will require the paperwork for the background check. Yes there are many people dealers and private parties selling over the internet.
If possible you will want to shoot the gun at a safe place of course. Just to make sure it operates correctly. Also, you want to know who you buy it from. I mean not from some guy on a street corner selling the gun he used to rob a liqour store last night.
Many(most) pawn shops in Ca. carry guns and the better ones will be knowledgeable and helpfull about them.

Buying a used gun can be a tricky thing. I wouldn't buy one off the Internet, nor off the street! Only at a reputable gun shop. Otherwise there's no way to know if the weapon has been used in the committing of a crime, or is stolen!

buy it walkin take care of all the paper work cross the t's and dot the i,s
why the 9 mm they jam real easy
go with the 45 or the 380
the 45 is hard hitting but over 100 yds the shell starts to fall rapidly
the 380 ( my personal favorite) packs a nice little punch and the recoil is no wear near that of the 45 my opinion the 380 is a smother, lighter, more well rounded gun!
good luck

Read your gun laws in California first, I live in Texas and as long as you have nit been convicted with a felony in the past, you can go to any gun shop or pawn shop and buy one. One thing you cannot do, is buy a gun on the internet.

You can buy one in person from an individual who isn't in the business, if you know somebody trying to sell one, but otherwise you'll have to go through somebody who holds a Federal Firearms License as a dealer. Even if you buy one on-line, you'll still have to get a local dealer to handle the transaction and transfer for you. All in all, you may as well just surf the local shops.

You are in a gun-hostile state.
By Federal law, you must purchase it either:
1) From a California gun shop, or
2) From an out of state gun shop or Internet dealer, which would have to mail it to a gun shop in CA, or
3) Some chucklehead in CA who wants to sell you a gun (dangerous unless you know him well).

in case you're asking this manner of question right here you of course have not have been given any thought with regards to the regulation with regards hearth-hands, or the age standards. you could't purchase a gun on line till protection tests, have been finished and you produce the correct workplace work.

if your 21 and and in good standing, I believe you can purchase a pistol. California is a bit sticky when it comes to internet and mail-order purchases if i remember right. Remember that if you plan to carry the pistol around with you...you need to obtain a concealed carry permit.
