All of the other answers are valid but they alter taste. I often add bisto but the best way without changing taste and you need very little - (bread crumbs) .

Im a chef, and Italian is my specialty, and curtispro has it on the money. Remove the lid, let it simmer on low heat for a few hours to evaporate the water. Make sure you watch it and stir often so it doesnt burn at the bottom. This is called reducing. Old world Italians never add flour, cornstarch or breadcrumbs to tomato sauce. It is simply simmered all day. Next time you attemp to make it from fresh tomatoes, may I suggest simmering it in a slow cooker if you have one? That way, if you have a busy schedule like I do, and dont have time to simmer sauce all day, the slow cooker will do the work for you and you will get great results. Hope this helps.

Use either tomatoe paste or a mixture of a few tablespoons of cornstarch and cold water well mixed and added to sauce and bring to a boil while stirring..

Don't add anything. Thicken it by simmering slowly to evaporate some of the water. Watch that it doesn't stick and burn on the bottom.

Yes and simmer a few hours. You could also add some tomato paste.

I think lilgoth meant "flour or cornstarch" not cornmeal.

Leaving the lid off helps. Even if it only goes down a half-inch or so, it will help a lot.
