It certainly has contributed, yes.
It is just a tool used to control people.

Yes. It has a stronghold on human will and its desire to become one with itself. It removes any reason to live a full and happy life. It fills its believers heads with its arrogance of having the only true knowledge - based on a book that was written for the ignorant of 2000 years past.
It promotes fear and confusion at the highest level. It destroys human will and the right to reason and think. Hell would probably be a relief to some of them, and the only thing they have to offer is they are going to go up bodily to a never never land to be rewarded by a deity they will have to praise and worship for an eternity. There could be no worse hell then that! If this is hell they should relish each and every moment of the now because their bodily resurection offers them a hopeless place of nothing more than the eternal worship and praise of their deity.

I prefer to remain neutral on this subject, but religion certainly hasn't helped the world. It leeches on our economy, causes wars, brings intolerance of other cultures, and slows scientific progress because it may contradict the beliefs of high-ranking government officials (cough, cough, George Bush, cough, cough). One of its original purposes was to gain support from the people for wars with other people. The real reason the Crusades started was because the Byzantine Emperor wanted help from the Pope with retaking some of the Muslims' land. The religious aspect was a method of getting ignorant farmers to fight for them. Hell may be a strong word, but you could accurately say that the world would be a better place without religion.

No it hasn't. It has become increasingly common to cite religion as the cause of war, and all other ills in this world. There are many reasons for war - greed, power, evil - where religion is involved, it can be man's own interpretation of religion for their own purposes, which is the problem. Religion brings comfort to billions of people around the world, and the world would be a much worse place without it.

Yes, the author Rafael Sabatini wrote many years ago, in his book the Seahawk, "Hell was surely made for christians, that,s why men seek to make the earth like it" If one studies the history of military conflict, God in his many guises, has been on the side of both the attacker and attacked, going beyond the Crusades even.

Religion by itself is pretty innocuous. It's more of the way people exploit religion. It becomes used to justify murder and also as an instrument of brainwashing, e.g. cults.
Religion is like money in a way. It's harmless by itself, but the way humans use it is what really messes up the world.
I agree that technology messed up the world more than religion.
