My future-husband and I just got back from a weekend trip. We have two kittens, a male tabby, and a female purebred Siamese. I had my sister check on them every day, she would give them breakfast, play with them a little, and clean out the litter box.

I guess Ariel, my Siamese, had a very hard time adjusting. She barely ate, and was extremely frightened from what my sister was telling me.

When we got home last night, she continued to be scared and barely came around for the first hour. That all changed when we went to bed. She HAD to be on top of us the whole night. Meowing, crying, the works. And, very rarely does she sleep with us.

I feel so bad. Is this going to happen every time we go on a trip? What can I do different next time? She has her buddy Armin to keep her company, but it didn't seem like it was enough. Thanks in advance!

I have 2 Siamese cats.

Siamese cats will throw a tantrum or fit of bad behavior whenever it feels jealous. She missed you terribly and will make sure you know about it. They will also make lots of noise to attract your attention and maintain it. It resembles the dog in its faithful devotion to its owner, unlike other cats who don't cling to their owners. They are people-orientated cats, preferring to part of your family. It learns to ask for your time and attention and also insists that you give them to it all the time, (meaning no one else). She is making a point and just letting you know how she feels. So don't feel bad. She will probably act like this again. Unfortunately you will have to face the consequences again.

She will be OK in a couple of days when she has calmed down. Make lots of fuss of her, let her know how important she is. Just keep on loving her. She will get the message and be back to normal very soon.

My 2 are the same when we go away on holiday too.

My Siamese lynx mix was the same way. Siamese get very attached to their owners, almost like a mother and a 1 yr old baby. It will get better over time but Siamese are far worse for this than any other cats I've owned. Siamese seem to have higher feeling and emotional levels than most cats do.

If you didn't have the buddy there, it would of been far worse. I left mine for 9 days once. I had to take 2 days off after wards to deal with her, she was so spooked and wouldn't leave me.

edit: reading girl above, yeah, Siamese actually like to travel. after my 9 day trip, my next one which was 11 days, I took her with me. She road with me for 800 miles, never complained, was a great passenger. Went into hotel fine, all the house keepers loved her and brought her treats and toys. If I still had her she'd still be doing trips. But cancer got her at 3 sad to say. But was lucky to find her twin, but not Siamese this time, more lynx.

Siamese cats are pretty jealous creatures . So it may have upset he really bad by leaving her first just give her a little time to get over it and next you could do either two things next time 1.) Have your sister come over a lot while you are there before you go on your next trip so she will become close to her but make sure you are there to to help your little girl gets used to your sister. or 2.) just take her on your trip next time there are alot of hotels that is pet friendly

Siamese and other Oriental breeds can be very needy (and very vocal). I'm sure as your kittens get older, they will learn to not get freaked when you leave. Maybe the next time you go on a trip, you could leave something with your scent--a nightshirt, for example--either where she most likes to lie or on your bed.

Jackie T has an excellent answer.
I think Siamese cats get a broken heart
when their owners go away.
Many years ago a neighbor of ours
moved away and left us her Siamese cat.
It was dead in a week.

If this was the first time you left them, some separation anxiety can be expected. As she gets older, she should find it easier to be without you. If not, check with the vet. She might need some kitty elavil (one of my cats did for a while).
