I will be getting my first car soon and I was wondering how do you even shop for a first car. Or what's the easiest way? And I'm talking about like a cheaper, used, and older type of car. I'm not even sure what I want yet.

The best thing I could suggest would be to figure out what is important to you in a vehicle. Do you need extra seating, better economy, lower payment, certain safety features, and so on. From there, you can go to websites such as autotrader.com and look through the used inventory in your area. You can also look in your local newspaper for additional resources.

Once you figure out which vehicle you want, do a little research on approximately how much they are selling for in your area. You might want to evaluate it yourself, or even have a mechanic look it over prior to purchasing.

Basically, write down what you absolutely need and base your search criteria around it. I hope this helps.

Ok here's what you MUST DO. Before you become a saleman's prey, you have to come up with at LEAST 3 cars (trucks) that you are interested in. Start by figuring out what features you want in your "new" car, such as ABS and traction control etc. Fuel economy is a concern for most these days understandably so, so dont forget to take this into consideration.
Honestly, depending on how long you intend on owning the car, your best bet is always buying new. If you get a used terd you might end up (with repairs) paying more than you would buying new. Go to this website Dealix.com put in your info and let those dealerships fight for your business! I did and it turned out that the best deal was worth the 35 miles I drove to save 3 thousand dollars on the final price for our 2007 Honda Odyssey. Love that van! Oh yeah and I highly recommend Honda or Toyota vehicles.
Good luck!

,please take someone who knows a bit about cars with you. Plenty death traps out there, be very carefull, make sure all the numbers are the same on the car and the log book, better to buy a car that has just passed an MOT, good luck ,and all the best for you and your new car

You are taliking about older cars so dont buy without an RAC or similar inspection. Plenty of folks have regretted not doing this!

AND dont look for turkeys, avoid some less reliable makes and look for Toyota or Honda and other reliable makes

To find reliable models look in JD Power/ top gear reliability surveys.

compare milage, fuel consumption, insurance, and condition of all used cars you have in mind and choose the one that you think is best. I would bring along a mechanic or a friend who's knowledgeable about cars, especially when you're a first time buyer.

Try autotrader.com they have tons of used cars on there. I suggest getting a car from an individual owner instead of a dealer because the dealer would be more expensive.

if you want cheap insurance go for a grade A car like a fiat panda, buy a car at 1.2 litre tank or less for maximum cheapness, you can get cars for a couple of hundred in adtrader or local newspapers
