History lesson.
Islam is a religion 5-600 years younger than Christianity.
In the 1400's the Spanish Inquisition was all the rage.
The Crusades took place between 1000 and 1300 CE.
We were burning witches into the 1700's.
The only difference between Islam and Christianity in their "teen years" is that there is greater firepower and therefor they (Muslims) are capable of doing more damage.

i think the root cause of this is lack of proper education. when people know that they have better choices than following the orders of their leaders, self-induced problems would have been minimized.

Exploitation of their natural resources by Western capitalists is a big cause. Punitive measures against terrorists that affect peaceful Muslims may be a growing factor.
