They usually get paid E-5 pay until they get commissioned.

My husband was paid as an E5 throughout OCS. I do believe if you are prior enlisted and have reached a paygrade higher than that, you are paid at that paygrade, but NPS are paid as E5s.

E5 is correct. Once commissioned, they're an O1E.
