I am currently an 18 year old male college student. I am looking to start bartending Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights to earn some extra money. I have no experience but I was told many places give training to people like myself. I tried craigslist but, everyone on there is looking for experience. Can I have some help please.

At 18, you're not allowed to bartend in New York. (You have to be 21 these days) but you can probably be what's called a bar back - those are the guys that haul the ice and replenish the bar for the bartenders. You're gonna bust your butt, but you should make some decent money. (You'd probably have a better starting wage than the bartenders, and many throw their barbacks a percentage of tips.) PLUS if you make nice to the bartender, during slow times, they might teach you how to pour drinks.... Start at a neighborhood pub kind of place. BUT, because NY is REALLY cracking down on the liquor-serving establishments, you *might* have a hard time.

I worked in NYC in some of the best restuarants in the city. And I can tell you right now, you wont get a bartending job anywhere. You can be 18 to serve alcohol, but you must go to bartending school, and have a solid knowledge of what goes into each of the major cocktails. Bartending, like cooking, takes skill, which is the reason they get paid so much. I would suggest serving tables, but then good restaurants will have you start as a busser first, since you have no experience. In the restaurant and bar biz, experience is everything. Some places value it more than a degree. Hope this helps.

You may not be able to bartend at 18. I know in VA you have to be 21. But if you can....look up the international bartending school...besides giving you great training they also provide referals for bars that are looking to hire recent graduates. I took their course when I was in my early 20's and loved it.

Another suggestion may be to just start walking into bars and introducing yourself...maybe start out as a bar back and work your way up to bar tender.

Good Luck

Go into a bar with a bartender you dont like with a group of people... invite other friends to come later(dont make it known your with them). Have one of your friends say the drink they got is nasty and ask them to speak to the manager. Have the friend explain that the drink is seriously nasty and say that if he doesn't mind have you make his drink, and your a licenced Bar tender. Then your other group say yea lemme try that guys drinks cuz our drink is shitty too. You just auditioned for a job. I helped my friend that way in an Atlantic City Casino by orchestrating this. The dude now has a better car than me just based on tips. Let me know if it works.
