I graduated from college almost a year ago with a 3.6 GPA and have been looking for a job doing anything. I realize that I had a five year gap in employment when in college. Now I try everywhere to find employment but no luck. Is this a common experiance with recent college grads.

The first job is typically harder. That said, it depends on several factors. What is your major? Have you had any interviews? Any offers? How well you have tapped into contacts within your family and friends circle and the placement resources at your school / department? Solicit comments from different people about your resume. Try to tailor your resume for the jobs you are applying to. Make sure your cover letter highlights the key points. The first job is rarely your dream job. Be flexible. Take whatever you can get even if it is outside your major, establish your references, reputation, and then seek better opportunities. Until you get your first job, keep learning, doing something, be active in your community. You never know where the right opportunity will come from. Good luck.

How are you looking for work, is important, it is a job in itself.

Keep a journal of all the places you have applied look at it and see if it was realistic for what you studied.

Maybe jobs are scarce in your field right now, this may change soon, so what else can you do, did you not work at all while in college? most students have part time jobs, did you not have to do a job placement? these are all looked upon as opportunities, if you can't find a job in your field right now maybe you should sign up with a job finding company, you know they get you temporary work and they pay you not the people you work for, it is a great way to get your foot through a door, and also you don't have to go to a certain job and can ask questions about what will be required and so on, I did it, and landed a government job. good luck. You don't always get what you want right away, it takes effort and persistance and yes even settling for now on doing something you don't particularly like but it gets you income and keeps you out of the poor house.

I think it can be common...depends on the job market where you live. And also what is trying to find a job everywhere mean? Many people say they need a job they have looked everywhere gripe they have no money but everywhere doesn't include jobs they feel they are too good for (like McDonalds, Chevron, Macy's) if you really need money to live (which you didn't say if you do or not) you may have to take a job you feel is beneth you to pay the bills until you can get hired on at a job that is right for you.

Good luck

I am not sure that this info will help you. But the time to find a job is the year before you graduate from college. It also has a great deal to do with your field of study. Of course if you can teach your subject... there is always a dearth of teachers. You could always go back for the one semester needed to get a teaching certificate(some places less) Teaching is a good place to start, then find a true vocation.

I don't know where you live, but my employer has 3 job openings online right now for college grads. It is in Indiana, though. Maybe you will have to relocate to get some experience.

the 1st couple weeks are the toughest. studying the menu, the place each and every thing is, the thank you to put in orders, that form of element. so which you're attempting to do your interest mutually as being perplexed. with a bit of luck they're going to offer you a breaking in era the place you merely have 2-3 tables on your area. And with a bit of luck they gained't start up you on a Friday or Saturday (regular as "being thrown to the wolves"). After that it rather gets to be a normal interest. you have each and every thing prepared on your head. "2 waters at 103, foodstuff further now to 204, on the formerly refills at 209, one 0 one needs to be reset, then take orders at 103" etc. The waitressing area is elementary, it is merely the administration and impolite purchasers that make it demanding. yet as long as you save that smile pasted on your face and are amiable and act calm, you will do high quality. even while all and sundry is throwing a monkey wrench into your plans. good good fortune! it is sweet money!

A college education is not a guarantee for employment. That is why so many are working menial jobs. Good luck.

What is your degree in and where are you looking for work?

If you have a degree in bio engineering New Jersey is a good place to get an entry level job that will pay about $60,000 a year plus every benefit.

If your degree is in Philosophy and you are looking for work in Mississippi you can get a minimum wage job flipping burgers.

Unemployment is very very low, so you shouldn't have a problem, unless you're asking for too much right out of the gate. You have to start lower than you think sometimes, then prove your value to the company. If you're still having problems finding work, maybe you should consider starting your own business doing what you enjoy and what you're passionate about. Good luck!
