My confirmation in the Catholic Church is coming up, and I need to choose a confirmation name. My name is Monica, and I was wondering if it's OK, or common if I chose my real name as my confirmation name, because I want to choose St. Monica.

Thanks!

Thanks for all the answers!! They came so fast! = ]

Well, I was thinking about what some of you said, when they announced my name during confirmation it would be

"Monica Maria (thats my middle name) Monica then my last name"

And in a group of 8th graders, they'd likely be immature, and laugh at that, which is why I've chosen another saint.

I've chose St. Rose of Lima, and personally I think It sounds nice all together

Monica Maria Rose (then last name)

Oh, and I was raised a Catholic to the person who asked.

2000 years ago that was the normal. But today people may look at you as weird. Be careful.

Why not take another? Why be Monica Monica?
Monica means queen in Berber
How about Augustina since St Monica was St Augustine,'s mother and he was the great father of the Western Church?

Monica Marie sounds nice-in honor of our Mother in the faith,Mary of Nazareth;how abou t that?

Im not totally sure if you would want to, unless your really interested in St. Monica, that might sound a little weird Monica (Middle Name) Monica (Last name) you might get a few laughs in the crowd when you confirmed, but if you like her the best, then go for it

I think it should be fine. If there is a saint Monica that you have something to back it up. I guess the only thing I would worry about would be people thinking you weren't creative enough to find another saint. Otherwise, your confirmation name really doesn't have a use later in life. It is just kind of a way to honor a saint or family member.

Can you? I guess...and it's a good name...don't get me wrong...

But at Confirmation there are special Sacramental graces imposed...you are called to a new life as a soldier in Christ's army...

Part of that includes the tradition of choosing a new name.

It's not "necessary"...but - if I were you I'd add a new name.

When I was confirmed(and this was ages ago) we either had to choose a second middle name or take our original middle name again. My middle name is Marie, and I took it again as my confirmation name. You cannot take your first name, as this is a celebration to choose a new middle name to signify a saint or someone important to you.

That would certainly be unusual. BUT, why not use it as an opportunity to pick another saint. Perhaps some family member or dear friend named after a saint.
