If the landlord doesn't live there, he does NOT have homeowners insurance. Homeowners is for OWNER OCCUPIED dwellings. He has a DWELLING policy, which may or may not cover glass. He also likely has a $1,000 deductible, or higher. So even if there's glass coverage, it's most likely going to be under the deductible.
You need to check your lease. Typically, glass breakage is the responsibility of the tenantk, but it should be spelled out in the lease. If it's not spelled out in the lease, and the glass was broken from the INSIDE, legally, it's going to be your responsibility. If it was broken from the outside, his.

If you are renting, then it would be best to contact the Landlord and explain the situation and tell him that you filed a police report. The homeowners insurance that the landlord has covers the home, however he has a deductible and it is ususally higher than the cost of the window. But you are the tenant so there shouldn't be a problem for you.

Your only option is to file a claim with your insurance company. At that time, it will be assigned to an adjuster who has to determine if the damages are covered under your policy or not. If covered, they will pay minus your deductible, or deny it due to it not being covered. As for the 800 number, you usually get a customer service agent who has no training or experience in claims and even can get answers saying either yes/no which may or not be correct. But since you have an agent, he is getting paid a percentage of your premium, so if he is any good, he needs to talk to an adjuster there at the company for a straight answer. He should call and ask the 800 number to be transferred to an adjuster. Most companies tell employees to treat agents well since they bring in business. good luck

Maybe. But most likely the cost of replacing the window will not exceed the landlords' HO deductable. And it's not in his best interest to file a claim for this as his HO premium could go up on renewal.

You are not authorized to make a claim b/c you are not the policy holder.
Contact your landlord for the repair..your landlord is NOT required to file a claim if they are going to pay for the damage themselves...which they will most likely do.
Most homeowners/investors don't turn in petty claims to the insurance, they pay them out of pocket.

No. Homeowners typically only covers things with more than a 1% or 2% value, so on a hundred thousand dollar property, $1000-2000.
Besides he should have rental property coverage, not home owners and you should have renters insurance.
In any case, he is supposed to repair it, as you did not cause it and the only general rule of rental is that the landlord has to make it livable.

It wouldn't be homeowners insurance, but he is likely covered for this.
I wouldn't put in a claim for one broken window though...

Yes
If the landlord chooses to claim this on his insurance but the deductable may be more than the cost of repairing the window.

This depends on the policy. Most policies have this kind of coverage. I would guess that it probably does and if it doesn't that it should. It isn't right for you to be forced to pay for damage you didn't do.

RE :Does homeowners insurance cover broken windows?
I rent a house at Ohio University and I know that our landlord has to have homeowner's insurance. Last night some drunk guy threw a trashcan through our window. I filed a police report. Would this be covered through our landlords homeowner's insurance?
