Mainly because they do not believe in a Soul or Spirit or Mind or Consciousness separate from the body, particurarly the brain.Basically they believe that the belief of an afterlife is a fear of death. They need to cling to the notion of an afterlife to give their temporary existence on this earth meaning. It is too much anxiety to think that this wotld we are now in is all there is.Nobody knows for sure there is an afterlife. The best that they have to hold to is Faith. That is stressed and stressed throughout the Bible.Other religions believe in the Transmigration of the Soul or more commonly known as Reincarnation. There are yet other religions that one way or another death is more than Nothingness, that we evade death.I have heard people claim that they know there is an afterlife, but upon further query it boils down that it is accepted on Faith.I hope they are right.I am afraid of Death.See Soren Kierkegaard said in the 19th century that we must take Faith by a Subjective inward turning and not a series of objective reasoned successive approximations. You either have Faith or you don't but you are not going to be in The Book of Life by logic.Give it some honest thought friend and try and pray to Keep the Faith...

Many of us believe only in the forces of nature . We , like all other living things here on earth , plant and animal have the same destiny . Why should we be any different from everything else ?
There is absolutely no evidence , except religious superstition , that the grave is not the end of the line for all of life . We come , grow up , reproduce , grow old , and die .
Isn't that easy to understand , believe , and look forward to ?
No impossible fairy tales about heaven , souls , gods , angels , and all the rest of the church imaginations .

Because I suppose when your dead your dead.
I sort of believe in it but then at the same time I don't.
I have read some stories of people who have never been to a certain place in the world and when they go there they knew exactly what to expect. It's like they've been there before.
People have their own views on life and death I suppose.
I really don't know what to belive.

why is it that some people DO?
some want to believe it because it helps them deal with the concept of dying. Their egos or arrogance, which tell them that they are too fantastic a creation to simply become part of the compost heap, won't allow them too deny a post life bliss.
and some are driven to these hopes because in their fear of simply being extinguished, (they actually still believe that their minds will still be around, but all alone in some dark hole or void). They can't let go. It is comforting to know that after death, other arrangements for them have been made and
they won't be alone, when death is, in truth, the ultimate solo journey. see you there? I very strongly doubt it.

It's undeniable that human reasoning can only be genuinely confirmed with tangible evidence. I suppose it could be those people that are without faith (and that's why we call it that-->FAITH is believing, even without such proofs) can find no reason to believe in living after having passed.
Though in my personal experience, death can be a very hard thing to get over without that belief. On the other hand, as in Existentialism, there are those who truly participate for goodness of most because they do not believe in it--since there could be no other time, or realm to do so.

this question gets allot deeper then this, surely if you don't believe in god or a higher spirit then why would you believe in life after death?
i feel personally want to believe there is something after we leave this life and if you don feel there is something then what's life all about.
there are a few people that are determend to prove the bible is just stories pasted from generation to next. so its up to each individual person to believe there is a god, and if so
that there is a place [as we know that's called heaven] where we go after life here on earth..

Has anyone died and given a mobile call and said that there is life after death.
Who has ever- after death - confirmed that there is life after death?
Not even Christ, Buddha, Krishna, or Mohamed or Guru Nanak.
I can tell u the story of a man who died and called his wife.
He said Darling, I am here in heaven and there are A lot of vegetables and willing females every where - I am a Jack\k -rabbit in Montana.

Because there is absolutely no proof that it exists. As a free thinking individual I have considered the possibility of there being an after life and have come to the conclusion that I will not know until I die. Please do not preach any religious text to me. I am in my sixties and have had plenty of time to consider the bible. I remain an agnostic.

Several years ago I had an unusual experience concerning an uncle, a distant relative who lived over a thousand miles away.
While driving my car I suddenly felt the unmistakable presence of this relative that I hardly even knew. He was more like someone I had heard about than someone I knew. It was very strange; it felt as though I was momentarily lifted right out of my physical body. I seemed to be suspended somehow beyond space and time, bathed in a love so intense It felt like I could have just disappear into it at any moment if It would have let me. It only lasted for a few seconds, but it seemed to last forever at the same time. I realize how crazy this must sound. The experience was so strong that at first I was afraid I was loosing my grip on reality. I finally managed to chalk it up to an over active imagination.
Three days later I got a call from my aunt telling me that this uncle we are talking about had gone into a coma and died the day I had the experience. It felt like ice water had been poured down my back when she told me this. I had lost any real ideas of God or faith and had become somewhat of an atheist. Needless to say this experience caused me to rethink some of the conclusions I had come to.
I feel blessed to now understand that even in our darkest confusion something loves us so much that it went out of its way to assist me and bring me back to a state of absolute certainty about Gods love for us.
During the experience it seemed like there was a vast amount of information that I was somehow allowed access to. One thing that I came away from this experience understanding beyond any shadow of a doubt was that any Idea that God is unhappy with us or would judge or allow us to be punished for any reason is simply impossible.
I can’t explain the love I felt with words. They simply don’t make words big enough or complete enough to do this. The only way I can begin to convey this love to you is to say that there was simply nothing else there. Nothing but love. No hint of judgment, no displeasure of any sort. It is as though God sees us as being as perfect as we were the day we were created. It is only in our confused idea of ourselves that we seem to have changed.
I hope this is of some help to you. Good luck. Love and blessings.
Your brother don
