Converting .mov (movie) files to other formats?

I'm trying to edit a movie file that I made using my digital camera and I'd rather not buy QuickTime Pro. But Windows Movie Maker won't recognize the .mov file. Suggestions? File converters? Other software? Thanks.

Try this programme. It's free and works rather well. It impressed me, and I'm not that easily impressed.
