As your question was about German or French, my answer is German, Germany is a large country, and as also German is spoken in Austria and Switzerland to some extent.There are over 100 million German speaking people in Europe.
French is the second most spoken language. Of course English is spoken by many, but not as their native language, except for United Kingdom and Ireland.

I live in Europe. Most spoken language beside, native languages, is certainly English. German takes the second place, French the third.

As native language, german is first, being official language in germany, austria, switzerland, belgium.(altogether about 120 million speakers).2nd is french (official language in france, belgium, switzerland (about 100 million speakers)).
3rd would be english (UK and Ireland)

German has more native speakers, but the French actually talk more...so I think they're equally spoken.

its quite complicated ,because its depend on the country,in Europe there are lot of countries listed,everybody had their own language.only Switzerland ,France and Africa,s national language is french.apart from that Switzerland is completely mixed of all European languages,first preference goes to french than others.
