Everyone I know is schocked when I tell them my son has to pay his own airfare home, doesn't even get a discount? Can't our airlines even offer them HALF?

I'm not saying the airlines should give them a free ride, but our federal government that flies our senators, congressman, all around and puts them up at fancy 4 and 5 star hotels could take a few cuts themselves. They eat for free!

If he takes a hop , yes its free, if he flies commercial he will pay what everyone else pays, he does have an option depending where is he coming from and if there is a base around. He can fly to Germany if he wanted to go on military stand by and not pay for anything, How many civilians can do that?

Nope Republicans and Conservatives will in basic terms bide our time. Politics is cyclic and somewhat some anyone is transforming into to be bored stiff with the uncontrolled movements of the government. I fairly have in no way as quickly as seen a Republican say they needed to go away the country over politics, yet I observed a lot of of Democrats saying they have been going to earlier the 04 election if Bush become re-elected. So i think of you have your sentiments reversed. Republicans and Conservatives will proceed to combat the stable combat precise right here on the homefront.

Who is going to pay for the free airfare? The airlines, the government? There are thousands, upon thousands of military members...it would be impossible to fund that!

Home from the base for visits you mean? Who exactly do you expect to pay this difference? The airline industry? They should just absorb the cost of thousands of military personnel flying home?

I do think that military personnel should get cheap travel if they're stationed far from home. It just a matter of compensation. Realistically the airlines are not going to pay it. But I think the military should provide travel vouchers for personell on leave to see family.

Ya, and why are are congressmen, senators, governors, state reps etc, given a wonderful health package when our troops get nothing. The US should treat the vets with more respect. When the troops are in need then give them what they need they are dieing every day. They have EARNED it. The money that is made from the Middle east alone should pay our troops way, 100%

of course he has to pay when he flys on vaccation or home . but they fly free during PCS'ing, when my husband(in the army) had to do funeral services for fallen soldiers. he should behowever get free flights on military planes. military personell gets discounts on restaurants, hotels , cars......
also sone MOs's have annual training conferences where they get free lodging and a certain amount for food.
my hubby is in the military and its not all bad.

LOL, and just why would you think this is a "right" that should be imposed on the airline industry. Why don't we just give the military, gee, I don't know, free food in restaurants. Yea, they should be able to just go into any restaurant and eat for free...and their family TOO, yea, that's 'it. Get real.

I am all for supporting our troops, but why should the airlines have to pay for their trip home?

I am a teacher, a very honorable profession, do I get free airfare to visit family members because the job I have keeps me from them?

When a service member is UNDER ORDERS, he/she gets a set amount of money for travel if he/she has to travel on a civilian air line. Thus, the travel IS free. If he/she decides to upgrade to first class, then anything above what was allotted comes out of the service member's pocket.
I once flew from Antarctica to McGuire AFB on a C-141 (via New Zealand, Pago Pago, Hawaii and Calfornia). I had been given $294 (back in '73) to get from west coast to east coast as 'BEST I COULD'. I only had to spend money for transportation from McGuire in NJ to JFK and the flight to Norfolk. It didn't come close to the $294. I got a free ride from California to NJ because the C-141 was going on to NJ from California and anyone wanting to ride, got back on.
Servicemen/women can go STAND BY which is much cheaper but it's like playin roulette. When I came back from Viet Nam, I got talking to the customer service rep near the loading ramp. He excused himself and came back a minute later. He told me to ask for a certain stew (whoops, that's not politcally correct, is it...'flight attendant') and she gave me a first class seat...San Francisco to D.C. I was in uniform.
Now, if a service member is ON LEAVE, that's a whole new ball of wax. I did catch a hop from Japan, to Travis AFB to someplace in Texas to Scott Base to Goose Bay to McGuire to Dover once. Took me 3 days once I left Japan, but it cost me nothing but some money for chow (although I did eat for free in Scott and Goose Bay).
