Thanks for the great replies on messy litter box woes ...

Now my other problem ... our kitten's stinky butt is not going away ..

I changed his food ...
I've washed his butt ... only for it to actually smell even worse after doing it!
He will start cleaning his butt, but then stops almost immediately.
My older cat even think this is a problem ... on a regular basis, Buddha will wrestle Baby down and give him a good cleaning ... yet baby still stinks.

Honestly, this is making it hard for me and my hubby to bond with the little guy. .. which is so important to me.

He hasn't yet been given a real name ... maybe it should be SCHTANKY butt boy!

Any other suggestions? Thanks so much!

The smell of your cat's butt comes from its anal glands, which are actually not that far
(genetically speaking) from those of a skunk. Some cats discharge the contents of their glands
naturally, others become blocked and require the glands to be "expressed" (a nice term for
"squeezed until all the contents come out"). Any vet can do this for you and, believe me, they
have a lot of experience doing it. Have your cat's anal glands checked.

I'm sorry I can't help you with the immediate problem, but I can give you a ray of hope. Our Buddy was an Uber Schtanky Butt as a kitten ... sometimes Uber Schtanky Butt + Dingleberries. We did our best with sink washes and baby wipes, but you could schmell him coming from across the house.

Then one day, he turned the corner. When he hit his gawky adolescent phase, he became a superb groomer (he's very long-haired so this is key). He maintains a very clean browneye and no longer stinks. What a relief. I'd take the advice of the answerers above and get him fully medically evaluated. If he gets a clean bill of health, pray for the best, and he might figure out the hygiene routine on his own -- ours did.

You might want to take your kitty to the vet to have his glands expressed. I know my female has had to have hers done. And when I visited my family last, one of my mom's cats had the stanky butt. I took a look and recognized that she had a problem with her glands--it looked like the same condition for my booboo a few years ago. So I told my mom to call the vet, and sure enough, she needed her glands expressed.
