You have to get it cleaned. If you don't it will rot. You should get it preserved if you want to look at it in ten years. It will discolor, minimally, if you don't.

No you don't have to have the gown cleaned and you've actually waited a really long to time to worry about this. The point of having it cleaned before you put in in the closet is to get out any stains and to remove any perspiration that's in the gown.
You don't have to have the gown cleaned and what most people don't realize is that there is no such thing as gown preservation. The gown is not actually preserved in any way. The gown is just cleaned really well and put in a box with acid free paper. I have to stress this, the gown is not preserved it is just cleaned really well.
Also, the only point to having the gown cleaned really well is if you think someone else will wear it, which is highly unlikely. My mom's gown is hideous and I'm sure that's what your daughter will think too. I mean seriously the gown will be almost 30 years old at that point.

My mother's wish was for me to wear her wedding dress from 1976. She had it cleaned and preserved and I just took it out of the box 2 weeks ago since I'm getting married in May and was thinking of wearing it. The stains were still there. and the dress yellowed. Now I think preservation has changed a little since 1976 but I couldn't wear my mother's dress. It looked like the scene from BeetleJuice where they res-erect the people back from the dead and she is wearing her wedding dress.lol. I bought my wedding dress last weekend. I'm not quite sure if I will have mine preserved, I may just have fun with it, it may make a great Halloween coustume!!

You don't have to do anything. My mom's dress was made by my grandmother and out of good material. It actually hasn't changed color either, even after almost 23 years. We were surprised though. My mom keeps it in a box in the attic. In all honesty, while it's a nice thing to have around and your wedding day is important, life will go on. It's not like you're going to gaze at it every day and relive your wedding. It's nice to keep but it's not going to be something you look at all the time. So no, you don't have to have it preserved. Do what you want with it. Like any piece of clothing, if you take care of it the more likely it is to last.

i preserved my sisters gown myself. all i did was put it in the washer cycle on gentle cycle and then put it in the dryer on cold and let in there for about 20 minutes and then i folded it and put it in aclear plastic bag in a box and wraped the box in clear plastic and put it into the closet for storage. when her daughter got married 20 years later she used the very same gown. all i had to do was press it where need on a silk tempeture and put it on a hanger.it looked just like it did when it was brand new.

it depends on what you want to do with your dress. our 'mothers' dry cleaned and preserved their dresses hoping we would wear them. if you want to keep your dress, take care of it now. it may not be worn again, but perhaps it will be used in other ways.

You don't "have" to do anything, but if you don't have it prepared properly for long term storage it will tend to yellow over time (if white or off-white) and any dirt/sweat on it from the time you wore it will stain the fabric and cause issues with it in future years.
Unless you think you'd want your daughter to wear it (and she'd agree) or granddaughter, consider selling it. Mine was part satin and got a huge water stain on it on my wedding day (it poured buckets that day) so I've used it 2 or 3 times in the past 20 yrs as a halloween costume. ☺
