So I get panic attacks whenever I know I am a long way away from a toilet. The worst is when I am on a train, and because I panic about it I end up needing to go. It happens in large cues aswell.
Has anyone heard of a phobia like this? How can I deal with it?
It may sound funny, but it really does put a limit to the things I can do and places I can go.

Hi, i have exactly the same problem as you, i get it all the time to especially when on trains and in cars i get very uncomfortable and feel asthough im going to "loose control" of my bladder, but dont worry you never will beacuse its in your head. This is a typical form of anxiety its not a phobia. There are several other symphoms related to anxiety if you look on wikipedia you will probably find you have several of these- like being unable to sleep perhaps? and having irational fears of things? Anyway consult your doctor. You can try speaking to people an undergo a special therapy which may help(can remeber what its called) but they basically make you feel panicy then help you to control this. hypnotherapy may work for you to. But if neither of these work your doc can put you on a medication which will stop the anxiety and make you feel better- im currently starting flouxetine- which can make the symtoms worst for the first week or so but then will help you alot.
Dont ignore this- dont suffer in silence- go to your doctor and tell him about this. Most of all you should know that you are not alone and there is people out there who will help you- This WILL go away. Hope this helps you, Take care x x x

Hello

This occurs more often than you think.

It's not a phobia as such, is more of an obsession but we need to find out why it is you feel this way.

Have you ever had an accident in the past where you could not reach the toilet in time? If so, did this accident cause you a lot of humiliation or embarrassment? Do you have a problem with a weak bladder or bowels?

If you can relate to any of the above then the problem can probably be simply fixed and you can get over your fear.

This type of problem is complicated and way way beyond the scope of this forum, but feel free to contact me if you need any further advice.

It's not a phobia. And it's not paranoia! It's some form of anxiety attack sounds like. There are successful ways of treating this. Get to the root of it with counselling maybe. Try the link below. One method I've heard of includes talking yourself through the situation (in your head) and comforting yourself that way. So you could say, 'OK I'm on a train and I'm starting to feel anxious. I don't really need the toilet but this is how it starts...We'll stop in fifteen minutes and I can use the toilet then...' etc.

Part of the 'fight or flight' response, panic is an essential part of the body's defence system. But, occasionally, it becomes more serious, as with irrational fears and panic attacks.
Everyone experiences anxiety - in fact, being unable to do so can be the sign of quite a serious problem. In our hazardous world, anxiety is a strategy the body uses to help the mind recognise danger and keep well out of its way.In Your case my friend, sometimes the fear of the fear can result in it manifesting into something more than it is.Mental anxiety can often lead to physical symptoms such as urinating more than you usually would . So I suggest finding out what is the root cause of your initial anxiety that leads to this you are experiencing now. Relax and if it really worries you always carry a spare pair of clothes with you just in case..

It isn't a phobia, it is an anxiety disorder. You fear at some level not being able to get to a toilet in time and losing control and being judged negatively by others.

You need to have treatment, either self help, learning relaxation techniques and setting yourself a graded exposure programme or go to see a clinical or counselling psychologist who will treat your anxiety via Cognitive Behavioural therapy. You can get better and improve your quality of life. Good luck !!

i have that / had that
its part of my anxiety / panic attacks
i learned to live with it and deal with it
i remind myself that wherever i am there is always a toilet nearby
on the train? keep it in mind you can get off at any station to go to the toilet, nobody and nothing can stop you from doing that
its a procedure, it wont happen tomorrow but the more positive thoughts you put into your mind the easier it gets

keep up the positive thoughts and good luck

well...its a common thing..but ur problem is jus a bit too hard on u...well...most ppl have a phobia abt going to places without a toilet or a toilet that is not their home toilet...mainly this is because of some unconcious hygene thing.....

secondly..the reason as to why u are afraid to go to places without a toilet is because you are afraid of the consequences that would arise if you had to...you would feel uncomfortable holding it for that long or other things that make u feel uncomfortable....your problem is that you are afraid of the situation that would arise if you had relieve yourself in a place without a lavatory.

i'd suggest that you go see a doctor...cos this needs professional help..

I would recommend hypnotherapy. A few sessions would probably help ,but the therapist himself will let you know how many.
I think that's the quickest, therefore the cheapest and most effective way of dealing with issues like yours.
All hypnotherapists must be registered and are trustworthy individuals. The yellow pages or google will give you a list.
Good luck. Fifi

i know how you feel i suffer from panic attacks only when i am away from my home at hours on end, it does limit you but you should really speak to your GP who can maybe introduce therapy (CBT) that can help change the way you think and approach situations you feel vulnerable in,
what i got told is you should face your fears, a panic attack even though VERY unpleasant it can't harm you physically
be strong, get help and get better

Being emotionally attached to a public convenience is a new one in my book. The good news is most places have a public convenience nearby, so i can't see how it would impeed your going about.

I suggest getting incontinance knickers, then it doesn't really matter if you don't make it to a toilet in time, you just empty them later on. I'd go and see a psychiatrist to find out what is causing this, don't worry, there is a toilet there.
