Prices for buying HD seem pretty high so I was wondering if doing it this way would be a better value, or if the quality of the picture would go way down doing it this way.

If the converters in 2008 you are talking about are for converting OTA Digital TV to Analog for old sets-you won't get HD on them. Without some kind of box, your HD ready set will be useless-it has to be fed a signal from an STB, or DVD or something to get a picture. It definitely would be cheaper to buy a TV with the tuner built-in than to buy a separate one later.

You mean an OTA receiver so you can put up an antenna to get free HD?

No, it's not a good idea.

It's cheaper to put up an antenna now to get free HD so you want to buy a TV with a built in tuner.

If you are not ever going to put up an antenna and plan on getting your HD from Sat or Cable - sure, save the money to get a "HD Ready" set without the tuner.
