All cats are at their most playful, and curious, in their first year or so. Cats are highly intelligent creatures, and part of their learning and development would include things that we would think are naughty, like climbing xmas trees. Don't put your expensive ornaments on there this year, just to be safe. It's almost a given that the kitten will be curious, but many cats by the second or third or fourth year will pay less attention to the tree when it goes up each year. Some cats never get over it, and when we've had those, we just put up general decorations and forego the tree. Our animals are far more interesting and important to us than an Xmas tree, ultimately. Cats are individuals, for sure. Find another way to decorate your tree this year, and keep an eye on your kitten, so you can redirect interest when the cat checks out the tree. I would say even put up your tree with no decorations first. When the kitten wants to check it out, hold the kitten and let him/her smell the tree branches, bat at it with her paw, even take a chomp on one---that's how they process the new info--does it move? how does it smell? how does it taste? Then put some decorations up. If the kitten goes to bat at the lower ones, remove her (don't hit, don't yell, because it doesn't work), and have a similarly interesting NEW toy to toss away from the tree for her to play with. The key is (1) satisfy her curiousity about the new things coming in, and (2) redirect her interest to something equally fascinating and new, but acceptable. Climbing is a natural behavior to a cat, so it's almost a given that your cat will want to investigate. As cats get older, some like to climb much more than others. I have a carpeted pole with three platforms on it in a corner of my family room, where we have our tree, and when the cat wants to climb or jump anywhere that I don't want her to be, I put her on the highest platform on the pole to satisfy that interest for her. Rotate the cat's toys--they do get bored each day with the same ones. Play with the kitten with a dangly toy, and you will have less trouble with mischief if your cat has playtime, which is mental and physical exercise.

Thats immposible I have had at least 10 cats (*maybe more*) at chirstmas time and there is no way to keep them off of that christmas tree. The thing to do is: 1. Don't hang expensive ornaments, 2. Watch them if it climbs to high it could tip the tree. and 3. try to occupie your kittie like give it a shiny ball that resembles the christmas ornaments(*not a real one of course*) And I think that covers it.
Hope this helps!!! :)

I close the door to the room with the tree, because my cat will go for that tree in a heartbeat. Also, if you put large boxes around the base of the tree , that will help... although she'll probably just go right over them.

Put many things at the botom of the Christmas tree so that the cat will not be able to climb it. My cat is around 4 years old and will only sleep under the Christmas tree. Or, you could get a mini Christmas tree and set it near the Big one. Don't decorate this tree, so you could let the cat climb this one instead. If your cat ever decides she wants to climb your tree, spray her/him with a water bottle and say "No!"

You DON'T hang expensive ornaments on a tree when you have cats!!!!!!
The cat WILL climb the tree no matter what you do, so you get prepared, tack the tree to a ceiling with fishing line and put up the cheap unbreakable decorations.

Looks like we all agree with the water thing then haha Shut them outta the room when you're not home, and when your are, keep a small water gun ( not the huuuge super soakers kids play with) or a spray bottle when you are home! Gotta be (very slightly) cruel to be kind...if they didn't learn through the water method, they'd learn through the tree-falling-down-on-top-of-them method... All in all, considering that you would have to put the tree up again, if they pulled it over, the water one seems easiest! Also try not to let anything shiny dangle from the bottom of the tree, they will be attracted to it ! Another thing to try, is attach small bits of orange peel around the bottom branches, cats (usually) HATE the smell of orange ( or maybe lemon would work,i'm not sure) Good Luck xxx

my cat has the same problem. last year he climbed to the top and slept on the branches all day long. but to keep from destroying it we just put the tree in our living room and close the doors and just try to keep him for going in there because after he does its like a maze trying to get him out of the tree lol funny times =D

put a gate like some baby gates around your tree to where it can't get inside there and set your presents inside of the gate so the kitten won't bother those either.
