Depends on what was agreed to when you purchased the vehicle. The dealership normally pays for the temporary registration. This covers you until the title or "pink slip" (title denoting a lien) arrives. This usually takes about 30 days. You then go to the DMV and purchase your license plates.

Read all those papers you signed at the time of purchase. It will tell you who is responsible for getting the plates. If there is a spot where you paid the dealer for "Title and registration" he will get it and tell you (or mail it) when it comes. Stay on them because once the 30 days is past, you can't get a new temporary plate legally in most states, and the ticket for driving an unregistered cars is yours to pay, not the dealers.

The only way to be 100% sure is to call the dealership, but typically you pay for your tags & registration fees when you purchase the vehicle and you receive the tags in the mail. If you purchased the car from a small time used lot, you will likely have to go get your tags from the DMV.

THE DEALERSHIP WILL EITHER CALL YOU WHEN THEY HAVE THEM OR IN SOME CASES THEY WILL MAIL THEM TO YOU.

IF YOUR TEMP TAG EXPIRES MAKE SURE THAT YOU GET A NEWER ONE BECAUSE YOU CAN BE TICKETED FOR THIS AND YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE FINE AND NOT THE DEALER.

The dealer should have applied for new plates for you, which would be mailed to your address.
