In my country years ago, it was allowed for draftees to pay their way out from serving in the military. What about you? Are you willing to do that?

I personally believe that any person that believes in freedom should be required to serve in the military.

People that do not believe in fighting can do the same type work in the military as they do in cilvilian life.

In switzerland, EVERY person is required to serve in the military in one form or another. They are in the reserve for life..

and NO, I would not pay to be exempt from the military..
I am going on 80 and if required again, I would go. I consider it my duty.

No way. Are you from a country that has mandatory service now? I think that is what the US should do. I have 12 years in the military, and I think every one should do at least 4 so they know what we go through and will always appreciate the freedoms they have.

That was realistic many years ago, when governments knew that wars actually cost money, so the the unwilling conscripts might as well be charged money to avoid service.
Personally, I'd prefer the reverse idea: 40 year olds like me being able to pay to be admitted to the military despite my obvious lack of youth and experience.
'We also serve who only stand and wait'.

Why would anyone choose not to serve their country?

Perhaps we should go to "Happy Birthday, you're 18 and going to basic training, pick a branch now." Serve 4 years, then decide to reenlist or not.

not really any need since service is on a voluntary basis. but even in times of a draft, it would be a nice fundraiser. even though little rich boys were in essence "paying" their way out all along. i wouldn't pay though. no
