I understand that you need to have a moisture barrier underneath (plastic), but is it really necessary to use the foam cushioning underneath????

Yes m'am! The padding will help if you have any imperfections in the floor, the cushioning will improve the wear and life of your flooring, will help reduce noise, particularly that "hollow" sound you can get on flooring over concrete, and will add a little extra insulation against your concrete.

For sure. You void the warranty if you don't use the recommended cushion. A two in one foam would probably be best for this application. Be sure to overlap the barrier as shown. It's not so much for sound as it is for stability. It allows the flooring some measure of flexibilty so as to not stress the locking system, especially if there is any high or low spots in the floor. If there are excessive spots like this, you may need to level the floor first or at least fill the low ones and grind off the high ones.

Yes!!!! You can get a foam cushioning with moisture barrier together in one piece. Make sure the concrete floor is level before you do this. If you can, get a very long straight edge and check the concrete for dips & hills. There is a self leveling cement that you can get to pour over top that can be used to adjust the imperfections in the floor. You mix up in a very wet solution and pour it over top.

Once the laminate floor is over top, if you have any "low spots" in the concrete floor underneith, your laminate floor will give when you step on that spot.

Yes it gives the laminate floor room to move and for sound. In the summer the floor will exurban and if you have no foam cushion it will buckle and that will make it fall a part.

Yes, you do need it, but when we did it, we put the plastic barrier down first and then felt on top of the plastic. That way, it further prevented creaking and squeaking floors. Our floor is strangely quiet and I love it.
