but my concern is that they are moving from the country to the city..How can we help them adjust, and more importantly, keep them from getting lost and/or running away? My boyfriends son will be devastated if they turn up missing...

These cats are semi-feral. And have never been allowed indoors for any lenght of time.
I was asking if there was a trick to teach them how to find thier way back, if they wander off somewhere..
SO MAKING THEM INDOOR CATS ONLY, IS NOT AN OPTION.

There is a way, they aren't going to be wild about it but it will work. You have to keep them indoors for a month. Then let them out bit by bit, under supervision. Then let them roam with collar tag and chip.
The time is very necessary with all the new things they will be facing.

Keep them inside.

We brought a country cat inside, he was 15 years old at the time. He was my wife's step mother's cat, we got him when she passed on. He loved being an indoor cat, and did not try to go outside at all. We made sure he had plenty of food (Senior formula dry only; never canned food (bad for his teeth)) and water, toys, scratching post, places to hide and play. He enjoyed looking out the window, and there was a big rabbit that would come around - they would look at each other, even then he would not try to get out to chase the rabbit. He lived to be 22 years old.

notwithstanding you do, do not supply up YOUR CAT. you will SORELY experience sorry approximately this in case you and your boyfriend ever injury up, and to point that it rather is the two 'him or the cat' is DISGUSTING. that's implying that it rather is o.k. to chosen your boyfriend, once you're all your cat has. You took the cat on as a lifelong accountability, and undergo in techniques in case you resign him/her to a shield, it is going to commonly be euthanized. That being suggested, it relies upon on how undesirable the hypersensitive reactions are. in the event that they're honestly undesirable and undoable, then you definately ought to perhaps only not stay at the same time in the meanwhile. in the event that they're bearable yet only incredibly are a soreness in the butt, then there are different varieties of drugs he can take to straightforward the hypersensitive reactions. additionally, giving your cat a tub a week incredibly facilitates decrease down on dander and allergens, i got here across that works lots with my cat with the aid of fact my father is allergic (I even have not lived at abode for awhile, yet I at times convey her with me once I bypass to). i might call a vet or a doctor/pharmacist and ask what the main accepted ideas have been, and discover out your thoughts. good success!

You're going to have to keep them inside. In almost every city, within the city limits, no animals are allowed outside without a leash, including cats. They can and probably will, be picked up by animal control if allowed to roam. They will get used to being indoor kitties, and you won't have to worry about them getting lost, stolen, run over, attacked, poisoned, etc, and they will live a longer happier life for it.

You will need to keep them inside. It will be tough at first, but everyone will adjust with time.

They have to be kept inside for at least the first 2 weeks regardless so their kitty GPS readjusts and they don't try to go back to their country home. You might as well just make it a permanent stay inside. The city is no place for a cat to be outdoors.

Outdoor country cats will have much mUCH more danger in a city environment. Convert them to 100% indoor cats to avoid loss, theft, death. You can put up a cat kennel in the back yard to safely contain them outdoors, but no way would I risk a city environment on a loose cat ina new place.

Your best bet is to keep them inside. If they have been putdoor cats their whole lives though then keeping them inside would be unfair. If they are outdoor cats then my advice to you would be to get a leash for them, i know cat leashes seem dumb but they are good, and take them for walks for the first couple of months you are there and see how they interact with the city if they are ok then you can begin to let them out but if they are not and they seem like they don't know where "home" is during your way home then keep them in.

If they are outdoor cats you need to keep them in the house for a while so that they don't try to go back where they came from and they are not used to traffic so you need to keep them inside.

WHY would you let your cats out! Cats are pets that are meant to be inside at all times! Don't think they get bored from being inside...spend time playing with them and giving them attention! It sounds like the cats were allowed to go outside I suggest that you take them to the vet and have them checked out to make sure they didn't catch fleas from being outside! I'm sure you would HATE to find out that you have fleas in you new place!!
