They do now, it use to be that guys that made bicycles could make them or other non related backgrounds.... like the Wright Brothers, Curtis and others that had very little training, they just went after a dream.
Most of the engineers today are pretty much nameless. They all do different parts of a plane because of the complexities. One may work on a rudder system for supersonic speed, another may work on the wheels to get the rubber compound correct for landing with the plane's weight. The list is endless since most complex plane's have thousands of interworking systems and parts.
There are hundreds and hundreds of engineers working on any one design now days with the exception of maybe Burt Rutan, who nowdays hires many of the engineers to asist him. www.rutanaircraft.com

An aeronautical engineer applies scientific and technological principles to research, design, maintain, test and develop the performance of civil and military aircraft, missiles, weapons systems, satellites and space vehicles. The role is focused on enhancing high-quality flight safety and standards, as well as reducing system costs and, increasingly, the environmental impact of air travel. Aeronautical engineering offers a wide range of roles. Most engineers specialise in a particular area, such as research, design, testing, manufacture or maintenance.

Johnnny. Aeronautical engineers only deal with aircraft. AeroSPACE engineers on the other hand deal with both aircraft and spacecraft.

Them and software engineers, mechanical engineers, electronics engineers and a whole bunch of other folks. Relatively few aeronautical engineers, but they are kind of important.

Yes they do. They design everything that flies from a glider to the Space Shuttle.
