I had triple bypass in May. The hospital, the surgeon and my cardiologist discussed rehab with me. My schedule after suregery was:

five weeks without lifting or strenuous exercise, taking several fairly short walks per day, followed by

twelve weeks of "phase II" cardiac rehabilitation, doing aerobic exercise (such as treadmills or stationary bicycles) under the supervision of rehab specialists while connected to an ekg, roughly an hour a per session, followed by

"phase III" cardiac rehabilitation, doing the same types of exercise, without an EKG, with some strength training.

Phase II must be ordered by your cardiologist or surgeon. In my case it was covered by insurance. Phase III is not covered by my insurance and is either $4.00 per session or $40 per month.

In any case, your cardiologist should approve any exercise or rehab program. Either your cardiologist or any hospital which does bypass surgery should be able to tell you what kind of organized rehab programs are available in your area.

Ask your cardiologist.
