1) Reduce salt -intake, cut down on gravy, preserved food, sauces anything that has salt, since salt will retain water in the blood vessel which directly increase the pressure.
2) Eat food that are rich in potassium. it helps to remove sodium and water which will directly lower the blood pressure. papaya and banana are good sources of potassium.
3) reduce intake on food that are high in saturated fats, cut it down to minimal. it would be better to set say 3 days a week to be vegetarian (better still if one can go full vegetarian).
4) watch out for high cholesterol food. it will thicken the wall of the blood vessels causes the blood pressure to increase. eat more food rich in good cholesterol (HDL), it helps to clear the fat accumulated in the blood vessels.
5) exercising regularly is good. but the intensity is important too. if he doesn't mind vigorous exercise, then he should plan a weight loss training program like running 20 miles a week. every 2 pounds lost in weight will reduce the blood pressure by 1.
6) relaxation is important for hypertension. don't get over stress, don't get too anxious. there are many activities help people to relax their body and mind. eg. listening to music, taiji, yoga etc.
fighting high blood pressure is a long process. don't worry too much, else it will only worsen the situation.

Start eating oatmeal everyday but you also need to start walking every day but no strenuous exercises until you see improvement and everything levels out.... and I would get approval from the doctor who will know best what could happen if you aren't careful.
Go to WalMart and buy the wrist blood pressure cuff (see first link) and start taking your BP every day so you can monitor whether there are any changes or not. Make sure you have been sitting for about 5 minutes and hold the cuff up about heart level ~ then do not move until it is finished. The results will be on the cuff window and you can save it on the monitor but I'd also suggest keeping a small notebook of the daily record so you can watch and compare each day.
Just remember that if it doesn't come down and you aren't careful, you could have a stroke which could either paralyze you or kill you. Some people's bodies work against them and they have to get on meds like this at a young age and you may be one of them. You may not want to take medication but it's better than either of the alternatives for one so young.
My grandfather had a stroke and suffered paraylsis on one side and couldn't talk and ended up spending the rest of his days in a nursing home. He couldn't feed himself and he couldn't bathe or dress himself.
Just remember that by not treating it and getting it under control, you could easily end up with major heart problems at a very young age which can lead to medication or surgery in order to live.
Good luck to you ~ hope all goes well

I don't know about quick without meds. But these will work:
Find foods high in fiber- beans, legumes, whole grains, cereals.
Eat apples and plenty of vegetables.
Eat fish or take fish oil pills.
Exercise- Cardiovascular 20-30 minutes at least 3-5 days a week.
Lose some weight, as blood pressure is prone to be higher if you are heavier, because the heart has to pump blood to more tissues.
Drink a couple cups of green tea- Decaf is better
Limit caffeine intake

3 years ago, I was diagnosed - hypertension with a reading of 160/100. I used to feel dizzy a lot, my legs had awful cramps, and levels were very low in my potassium, causing my fingers and toes to always cramp together. One day I started to feel really faint while I was driving with my daughter in the back seat and I passed out, hitting 3 cars and ending up in a ditch. That moment,I knew I had to do something because my meds weren't working. I heard about this diet from a friend and thought I'd give it a shot. The results have been remarkable. In just 21 days, I honestly can't remember feeling this good, my blood pressure went from 175/110 to 125/70.

there is no quick fix for high blood pressure..many times there are no symptoms of high blood pressure, but the damage to your body is being done everyday you allow your BP to run high....in twenty years when you have heart disease or a stroke or kidney disease you will wish you would have taken care of your BP while in your 20's....all the above suggestions are good, but most times are not effective enough....do what your doctor suggests, like the medication, even losing just 10 pounds may drop your BP...then after 6 months or a year of the above lifestyle changes maybe your blood pressure will stay lower on its own and your doc can take you off of the meds...

Debbie ( TX MOM ) gave very good advice!!! I'm a nurse and I agree with her .
4 main things effect blood pressure.
Stress, do what you can to relax
diet, eat healthy and try to drop a few pounds but eating healthy is good even if you dont lose, watch salt intake all pre packaged foods are full of sodium....
Infection.... if you have an infection it will cause your blood pressure and blood sugar to be out of control.
and last but not least PAIN. If you are in pain do what you cant to lower it. Pain alone will make your blood pressure to be elevated.

Lose some weight.
Lower your salt intake.
Don't allow your body to retain water--use caffiene as a dieuretic if you need to.
Exercise regularly.
Meditation (it's very effective). E-mail if you need help with that.
Listen, your BP is NOT that high. Good health habits can get it down quickly. You're the best kind of patient to have, relatively healthy, young and interested in doing what's necessary to treat the condition.

Been on BP Med Lotensin w/HCT 8 years.

Bp can be lowered by eat 4 stalks of celery ;hawthorn tea;garlic and take magnesium(500-1500mg a day) And Calcium at bed time (1000-1500mg.) potassium is as helpful . Don't use table salt . those that are telling you about fiber are confusing cholesterol with BP.
Regular exercise can help bring it down. try relaxing ;may be take up meditation.
