You touch door handles and what not a hundred times a day and you probably haven't gotten the plauge so far. But if the skin on the bottom of your foot touches where the bottom of somebodies shoe has touched you're going to get sick? pft!

I go shopping barefoot all the time. I am a full time barefooter and have been for over a year. There is nothing gross about being barefoot. Like Sheriam said, our skin does a great job of keeping germs and pathogens out. Also, I read a study about where most germs are found and guess what? There are not as many germs on the floor as there are on items touched by hands like door knobs, escalator handels and faucets. Even filthy public bathroom floors only ranked half way up the list of most germ infested places. There are no health codes regarding the general public being in places without shoes because they know there is no risk in barefooting.

Yes, every time I've gone to the grocery store for well over ten years. In spite of persistent myths, it's NOT dangerous, unhealthy or gross. Feet get very tough very quickly, our skin is made to keep pathogens out so unless you lick your feet or prop them up on the table, germs are of no concern, and feet are fully washable. And it's never been a problem with management; I've never even SEEN a 'no shoes, no shirts, no service' sign here in the Netherlands, nor on my trips to Belgium and Scotland.

Even in the US, there are NO health department rules against going barefoot, and insurance companies don't require or even recommend footwear for customers. See source; signs citing Health Laws are common but FALSE. Stores may set their own dress codes but even in the US, while it may seem 'all stores' have a sign requiring shoes, many stores don't have such a policy and don't care. Unless you're in a very small town where there is no choice, just shop around a bit and if one store doesn't want a barefoot customer take your business some place else.

I have NEVER gone shopping barefoot and I personally think it is disgusting that a person cannot find the time or money to actually put on a pair of shoes/flipflops (even slippers are better than nothing but that is pretty disgusting too) to go shopping to the local shop or to the mall and that goes for children too. I live in part of the world where it is warm or hot for most of the year.
