what is other person may or may not have it? and no symptoms? can damage be done?

Many of the STIs CAN cause lasting damage, although many of them do not. Most STIs are asymptomatic, meaning that they don't cause symptoms in a person and therefore the person may be unaware of his/her infection. Some STIs will "go away" on their own after a few months, regardless of treatment --- but that is a bad way to deal with them. You should have all STIs treated promtply to avoid an increased chance of long term complications.

Death is a VERY rare outcome for most STIs.

The best idea is to get checked at regular intervals for STIs regardless of your perceived risk and get treated immediately for any that you have
