The bacteria produce waste products that accumulate in your system (think bacteria poop). Also, your body tries to fight off the infection with a fever, which hurts you (the theory is that your own body is stronger than the bacteria, so they will die first). Finally, all the activity of your immune system leads to swelling and fluid accumulation, making you feel sore.

In many different ways, bacteria is not contagious, I had bacterial meningitis in february and I almost died I had to be hospitalized for 12 nights and it was horrible. You dont "catch" a bacteria. I dont know exactly how they get into you but they are quite dangerous, so get better answers if you can. good luck.
