ooooo, a chocolate fountain? sounds delicious!
grapes are wonderful dipped in chocolate. so are kiwis, pineapple(you already said that), clementine wedges, grapefruit wedges are awesome, mango is good if you can find it, as is papaya. what i've found so far is that you combine other tastes with the sweetness of the chocolate that contradict it. sour-sweet fruits are good, and mildly sweet fruits are good as well. try not to include too many overly sweet items to dip with. marshmallows and pound cake often will make you feel sick after having more than a couple pieces. look into all the fruits that are available to you and pick ones that look yummy.

Ok, do not use hersheys syrup. This does not make for a good fountain. When you go to a cheap chinese buffet they use that. Use godiva chocolate its so delicious. If you want to do something different try adding Kahlua, Irish Cream, coffee, or Amaretto to the chocolate fountain. You can make rice krispies treats and cut them into little tiny squares and dip them in the chocolate. I have heard you can dip fig newtons in the fountain. You can also use twinkies. You can try to use sugar cookies. You can use beautiful different dried fruits. Try pear slices. Or, maraschino cherries.

We tried a recipe with 48oz regular chocolate chips mixed with 3/4cup veggie oil (to make it more smooth) You melt it in the microwave first (about 3 min) and then poor it in. It worked great.
Try using:
Grahm Crackers,
Brownie Squares,
Pretzles,
I think balls of Cookie Dough would be awesome too,
Fun size Milky Way or other soft candy bar,
Soft Carmels,

You can use normal chocolate but with like a teaspoon of vegtable oil in to loosen it.
before the party use a melon baller to make little balls of ice cream and put them on a baking tray in the freezer. Then when the choc fountain is up and running, take them out and get people to use cocktail sticks to dip them in! its amazing, hot choc and cold icecream all on little sticks! x

Try creme puffs. Its addicting.

As for special chocolate: yes, you do. Ask the people you rented/borrowed the fountain from which kind works best. If you bought one, there should be some mention in the directions.

Yes, or you can add vegetable oil. The bars you find in supermarkets have less cocoa butter and they need a special additive (vegetable oil) to work in the fountain. You can order some off line: http://www.sweetfountains.com/sales/catalog/_CHOCOLATE_AND_MORE-p-1-c-75.html?gclid=CJTG282Dz48CFQsigQodIkBguw
Things to use: Dried fruits (bananas), figs, frozen cheesecake, pretzels, cookies, brownies, meringue, raspberries...
