Some countries do without any problem.
Some people get very emotional over killing of these fish. It's like they believe you're killing Flipper.

Well, whales are actually still hunted in many countries and some species are really paying the price. Dolphins on the other hand are highly intelligent creatures. The have a very sophisticated language. Anyway these animals are the only mammals in the sea so just let them be.

i am no scientist or conservationist. however, i think it is a matter of something called 'hunted to the brink of extinction'.
some animal do no breed fast enough to keep up with MAN'S GREED. there are enough man-made obstacle these creatures have to face w/o ALSO being hunted. there ARE already laws in place to protect, tigers, rhinos & elephants and yet THEIR numbers have NOT increased to what they once were. it is something call POACHING & the black market . the profit APPARENTLY outweights the risk.
(sorta like drug trafficing or human trafficing)
the other thing is animals that are breed for consumption by human are not likely to DIE off.
just as an aside how do you KILL a mother's child WHILE she watches in a HUMANE way??? just curious.
fish in schools are NOT in a family group. fish general lay eggs & the eggs hatch w/o 'parents'. whales & dolphins live in pods of females, their calves & young males.
again, i am NO scientist.... so, can the fishermen KNOW when a whale or dolphin is pregnant.???
and if NOT. then an UNborn is also KILLED .. which circles back to they cannot breed fast enough to keep up with the slaughter.
now if you want to breed them to KILL them like livestock...
i 'may' view this question a little bit differently.

Its because they are endangered. If there were millions of whales left in every species people would not care so much but they are endangered and just beginning to make a recovery. They are mainly endangered because people have already over fished them and because they only have one live baby at a time there population has a hard time recovering unlike fish who can lay hundreds of eggs.

The answer to your question is, as most issues is ,MAN! We are the most abusive animal on the planet. We have used and abused every resource, raw material, animal, vegetable, mineral, the planet, ourselves, each other, and anything else we can.Our selfish self-serving ways have created wars, famines, plagues, diseases, and 95% of every other problem in the world. We fished the whales to the point different species are on the verge of endangerment and extinction. In Asia, Dolphins have been herded and slaughtered for many years. Instead of looking for more ways to use and abuse, is it not better to try and find ways to expand the quanities of these species, before we ADD them once again to the 'SLAUGHTER' lists?? Have you not noticed that most of the animals on land and in water are becoming fewer and fewer. Some are almost to the point where you will only be able to see them in a ZOO! Mans total disconcern for his enviroment because of his greed is the reason for the state of the planet today. When sharks are caught in the ocean and once in the boat ,their dorsal fin is cut off and then thrown back in the ocean to die. Why? Because the sharks dorsal fin is considered in asia an afredisiaac, and used in medicine. Instead of looking for alternatives and new ways to conserve and expand the planet and its resources for ourselves and future generations, we look for more ways to exploit and exhaust every animate and inanimate resource the planet has.. The Earth and We are FINITE, and unless we amend our course, we are all doomed! SOLOMON

The reason whales and dolphins aren't hunted is mainly due to how many of them there are and moral reasons
Dolphins aren't hunted because they are extremely intelligent animals. They are being studied mainly and also they have saved human lives many times before. If you kill them its not really proper is it?
Whales are already dying off fast enough without the help of being attacked and eaten. Most species of whales are actually in the decline because of all the pollutants they take in.

I don't think it makes sense. The fact that the dolphins know they are being slaughtered is troubling. Apparently our main red meats like lamb and beef supposedly can figure it out as well.
I just accept the circle of life.

Then why not also slaughter and kill humans in overpopulated places in a humane way ,
Dolphins are just about our equals if we consider brain capacity, their brains are bigger than ours ,
Have you ever been close to dolphins and looked into their eyes ,you will get a shock ,it is like looking into the eyes of a person ,with intelligence behind it .
They can use telepathy a friend who worked with dolphins ,was continually freaked out because the dolphins knew what tricks she was gonna do next as soon as she thought of it .
They also can communicate ,by high frequency sound waves ,and use sonar to detect food.
All in all a very sophisticated being .
I myself have been visited by dolphins when out on the open sea for many days in a small craft .and they kept me company for several days ,
it was sad to see them go .
There have been many recorded events of dolphins saving people from shark attack .
And in Australia was a famous dolphin called Jack that guided ships through a difficult passage with submerged rocks .
All through history are incidents of dolphins being mens friend .
What gives Humans the right to eliminate these creatures from the oceans ,
I can only imagine that you must be a Christian who has been brainwashed that humans are superior beings on this planet who own all of nature and all that dwell in it .
It is appalling that you even place yourself in the conservation category ,
you should be under religion with this question
As far as whales are concerned they perform essential operations in their eco systems to remove them means changes in the systems, besides they are in enough trouble as it is from polution because they eat plankton

there is a "line" are culture puts dolphins on one side and sport fish on the other. in some cultures it is acceptable to hunt dolphin, and dog, and cat, and sometime people. Where do you draw the line? Mine does include dolphins.

I would imagine because many whales and dolphins are still endangered (unlike chicken and cows).
Maybe once their populations increase to safe levels, it would be more acceptable.
