White blood cells help fight infection in your body. There are several types (lymphocytes, granulocytes, etc.) You can either completely lack (have zero), have low levels (too low to help fight infection, or low-but can still fight infection ok) or have normal levels of white blood cells. This can be true for all white blood cells or just one type of white blood cells.
For example if you completely lack B cells (a type of lymphocyte), you would be born with a disorder called agammaglobulinemia. Or if you have low levels of neutrophils (a type of granulocyte), you would have neutropenia. Depending on how low your levels are and what type of white blood cell is affected will determine what problems you will have (if any) in fighting infection or causing autoimmune problems (autoimmunity is when your immune system attacks your own body by mistake).

white blood cells enable your body to fight off any infection. if you do not have enough, a simple common cold could kill you... for example a cancer patient going thru chemo, they are so susceptible to germs!!! if this is your issue, listen to your dr, wash your hands after any contact with anything, where a mask in public and stay away from germy people ;o)
