call the needle exchange in your area, they will come to your house, take your sharps and give you a new container for free.

It depends on where you are.

Some states allow the containers to be thrown in the trash after they have been sealed. Other states will impose heavy fines for doing that same thing.

Your best bet is to take the full container (seal it first) to either your doctor's office or a local hospital for disposal. That's what I do since where I live, the containers cannot be thrown in the trash.

The reasoning behind that is while the containers are puncture resistant, they are no puncture proof. Also, when a garbage truck compacts the trash, the container could break open and spill the used needles and lancets all through the garbage and leave the sanitation workers with higher risk of an accidental needle stick. The workers would not know who the sharps belonged to and have no way to trace them. They would have no idea if the person they came from had a communicable disease and no way to find out for certain.

If you have no way to get to your doctor or a hospital, see if you can ask a friend or family member to drop off the container for you. I hope this helps you out.

Here in Canada, we can take our sharps boxes to the local pharmacy and they take it for disposal. Some drugstores give you a new sharps box for free as replacement.
Do not ever throw them out, even if they are sealed.
Ask your pharmacist! Most pharmacy chains have a lot of resources and supplies for diabetics so they would know what to do.

I would call the Dr. and ask how you are suppose to dispose of it, or even the hospital. I know there is somewhere that they are to be taken, and disposed of properly.
