He is getting better now, after being held in a coma for a long time. He is insisting for a sigarette. Apparently in his mind he has not stopped smoking yet. How can we change his attitude ?

My Dad had lung cancer many years ago and had a third of one of his lungs removed, he went back to smoking, it killed him in the end and I wish with all my heart i could have stopped him. Maybe the doctor could make him see sense, or show him my reply.

It's too bad you don't live near a medical college... you could go on a little field trip with your son to the LAB where they keep cadaver donors---have them show him the insides and the lungs of a person who didn't bother quitting smoking... or, have him read some of the answers here....like for example, you could tell him about ME. I smoked for YEARS.... oh yeah I heard everyone warn me of the dangers...but hey, NOTHING bad ever happens to me--only to OTHER PEOPLE.... well, that attitude is lovely EXCEPT one day, you wake up and you are bloated so badly you can hardly move, you can't dress yourself and you feel sick. You are rushed to a hospital where, when you finally wake up, some doctor is standing over your bed telling you you have 2 months at least and 5 YEARS at most to live....maybe THEN your son will quit...he's already close enough having already had LUNG SURGERY---I didn't even have any of that yet.....I haven't touched a cigarette in a year and I smoked for MANY years... it's just I quit a year to late... I sure hope that isn't what happens to your son.

Sounds like subconsciously his mind is telling him he wants a cigarette. Most likely his body is not craving a cigarette -- his mind just doesn't know yet.

you can't, until he chooses to quit, there is nothing you can do. Frankly after what he has already been thru, I think he must have a death wish...you might try getting him a psychiatrist.
