One of the nice things about throwing a house warming party is that people often bring things that will be handy in setting up housekeeping--towel sets, bath mats, tools, gift certificates for home stores, dish sets, you name it! Its just a regular party actually. Yes, send out invitations, have some drinks and food (I don't serve alcohol at parties because of liability issues, but thats just my choice). You get the chance to celebrate your new home and introduce it to your friends, its a happy occasion, enjoy!!

Isn't that what we just had a bunch of here in so. cali? Oh wait no, those were fires.
For a house warming party, its really up to you exacly what you do. But in general you send out invites to close friends and family, even a few neighbors to get to know them. As for food, thats up to you. Generally you at least serve appetizers. But since its a new house, alot of people have a pot luck. Those are actually fun, and I enjoy them. I was raised that when you do this you leave the pot or dish with the person. Don't know if this will happen for you.
And the point of this is to share your home with your friends and family. If you are religious you could bless the house or something. Its all up to you. Its your house, you own it, you make the rules now.

Listen Sweety, have the party. What you do is go to a store that you really love, like do you have a bed bath and beyond, J.C. Penny, sears etc near you? You go to the store, and you register. You go around the whole store and pick the things you need, and or want. When you send the invitations you write in each invitation, you are registerd at so and so. You buy a cake no more than 20.00 dollars depending on how many people. You either cater, or make yourself little sandwiches, chips and dip, etc. people come in eat drink be merry give you a gift and thats it. Its so simple, please do it, you get alot of free stuff. However if you got married recently and then all those people just gave you a gift, if not go for it. I promise, it is a must to do. Don't get all caught up and getting nervous about cleaning and food, just have a good time, and you might want to thing about playing games, and for prizes give away cute little candles, or candy, something like that. You can play sharades, any games Its so fun, if u dont do it, then can I please get the gifts. You need extra info, e-mail me.

I have thrown one of these. Generally it's a pretty casual event that are during the day. I made mine an open house from about noon - 6. It was really casual foods. Coldcuts, a few types of salads, chips, dip, etc. I had a few bottles of wine, beer, soda and water. Paper products in one solid color. I did send out invites. I had delivered them to some of the people on the block just to get to know them.
Technically the point of having a housewarming party is that you want to welcome friends, family and neighbors into your home. But most people bring gifts for your home, a bottle of wine, a GC to a home store, etc.

The point is for people to come and check out the new place...and the expectation is that they bring you a gift. Yes, you would send out invites and serve food and drink but there is nothing else to it than that.
