Ive heard they are from a calf's stomach? (stomach fluid or something?) Is this true? I wanted to pick up some bread the other day and enzymes was listed in the ingredients.. is there any type of bread other than organic brands that make bread without it? WHat other products have enzymes?

Thank you for your help. x)

Enzymes are like a key that starts a motor. The motor is ready to run, but won't start w/o a key inserted. Food cannot be broken down without them. The good news is, unless you were born with an inborn error or metabolism, you have all the enzymes your body needs to digest normal food.

ie: Cows and horses can digest hay and grass b/c they have the enzyme to do it; humans do not, so we dont' eat that.

It may or may not be animal enzymes. Labels often do not specify so you need to look for items that specify vegetable enzymes. Many cheeses have enzymes that are also called animal rennet which is from a calf's stomach. There are however many more cheeses now adays that have "made with vegetable rennet" on the label.
