I just meet him two months ago; he is new in town and doesn't have family close by. He needed to trust someone to share the news and he chose me and only me. But I want to be more than the friend who sits and listens, what can I do?

Sit and listen

Pray - if that suits both of your religious views

Be there for him

Be real and keep it real. If you decide to become intimate or anything, have a full understanding of the ramifications. Always use safe sex.

Encourage him to develop a network so you won't have to bear the burden all alone.

Be aware that there might be something in his choosing you and only you. He might be wanting to scam something from you or play on your emotions. Be real. Eyes and ears open. Brain in gear. Be aware.

Be his friend, do nothing but be who you are. Be compassionate and harmless and indeed... sit and listen.. you can only be what you can be, don't ask to be more or any less. He needs you.. and you may need him.
