Hummus or hummus also spelled hamos, houmous, hommos, hommus, hummos, hummous or humus is a dip or spread made of ground chickpeas, sesame tahini, lemon juice, and garlic.

In Arabic the word hummus is used to describe the dish or just chickpeas by themselves. The full name of the dish is hummus bi tahina' chickpeas with tahini'. Hummus is popular in various local forms throughout the Middle Eastern world.

As an appetizer and dip, hummus is traditionally scooped with flatbread (such as pita) but it is increasingly eaten with chips and crackers of various kinds outside the Middle East. Hummus is also used as as part of a meze, as a sandwich filling and as a dressing (for such things as falafel, salad, grilled chicken, or eggplant).

Hummus can be garnished in numerous ways. Some popular garnishes include parsley, paprika, cumin (traditional in Egypt), pine nuts (traditional Palestinian [1]), chopped or thinly-sliced tomato, cucumber, pickled turnips (traditional in Lebanon), cilantro, sautéed mushrooms, whole chickpeas and olive oil.

It's kinda sad that a lot of the Lebanese side automatically assumes that the Israelis are "trying" to steal Hummus. They legitimately like the food, so they consume it. In reality, whether made by Israelis or Lebanese, it's good; though, the question is for better, which doesn't mean I have to choose one as good. It's just sad that you are criticizing something that isn't an issue. It's more akin to ideas like who makes better pizza: Italians or Americans? It originates from Italy; yet, the Americans are pretty damn proud of how they make it, and as such it has been integrated in their culture. Honestly, I've had both, and I can say that I did legitimately prefer the Israeli hummus better. I will concede that I've had it more, so I could have just developed a taste for it, and I wasn't comparing them side by side, so I could be mistaken. Though, I will say that Hung did get the competitive spirit right. Both countries take hummus as serious business.

Hummus is a paste made by grinding up chickpeas.
It is then flavored with spices such as garlic, lemon, basil or others. (not all at once, of course). I've had runny hummus and stiff hummus....the consistency depends on the brand.
It's delicious as a dip for baby carrots, celery, crackers, pita bread, sliced bell peppers, etc. I use it as a condiment all the time. I use it in lieu of mayonnaise on my veggie sandwiches. It's incredible! :-)

Hummus is basically just chickpeas, and certain oils and pastes with some lemon juice mashed up with some spices it can be used for just a dip or falafels which has some onions i believe and it is all in pita bread. Or it can just be used on it's own or anything you like.

Hummus is great. I'm not even a vegetarian (actually I love meat and will never give it up) and I eat it all the time. It goes with just about everything.

Hummus is the greatest invention ever! I eat it ALL the time...I like to eat it with crackers or tortilla chips. It is ADDICTIVE!
You can also make a really good veggie sandwich with it...just put a whole mess of it on some bread, add some avacado, lettuce tomatoes, sprouts and whatever else you like on your sandwiches.

It is high in Protein and has a decent amout of good fat in it.

Everyone else has replied about what it is already but I just wanted to tell you how I eat it: I spread it thickly on wholewheat toast or crackers and then put a little bit of sundried tomato paste or chilly pepper on top, yumm!

Hummus is vegan crack.

No, just kidding. It's a spread made of pureed chickpeas, tahini (sesame paste), lemon juice, and seasonings. You can eat it with veggies or pita bread or on top of your falafel.

i usually have it on one side of the bread in a sandwich, and avocado on the other.

you can dip almost anything in it, and you can put it on any salad too.

theres ther ones out now that are the same kind of thing, but made from lentils or pumpkin : )

you can make it yourself too.
