In most people, mitral valve prolapse is harmless, and doesn't require any treatment at all. It is a condition where the mitral valve folds back into the atrium or one of the upper heart chambers. It is something that you need to be aware of, and typically your doctor will monitor this condition as occassionally it can progress and result in a leaky valve (known as mitral regurgitation). You also will be advised to take an antibiotic before dental procedures because this condition puts you at increased risk for endocarditis (infection in the heart). Ask your doctor if this is something you need to do. You should have had an echocardiogram to be diagnosed with MVP.

Some people feel fluttering in their chest with MVP, and are sometimes prescribed a medicine called a beta-blocker (atenolol, lopressor, toprol) to help decrease this symptom.

Arrythmias are different than MVP in that it deals with an abnormality of the electrical system of the heart, or how the heart works as a pump. There are many types of arrythmias, some dangerous, others not at all. It would depend on which type of heart rhythm abnormality you are referring to?

Hope this helps!

Since you're asking the two together, I'm assuming that you have MVP (mitral valve prolapse) and you're worried about the potential arrhythmia that it can cause.

Simply put, the Mitral Valve ensures that blood does not regurgitate (backwash) into the left atrium when the left ventricle contracts. With MVP, the valve is "incompetent." that is, either the valve buckles or is blown backwards into the left atrium by the force of the ventricular contraction, and a little or a lot of blood is backwashed into the left atrium with each beat of the heart. Over time, the left atrium becomes enlarged in an effort to develop more muscle to push backlogged blood forward towards the left ventricle. As left atrial muscle grows larger, it becomes more easily irritated, making the left atrium more likely to fire off it's own erratic or improper beats outside of the normal cardiac electrical sequence.

Hence, if the Mitral Regurgitation from your MVP is severe enough, you'll get left atrial enlargement and probably be susceptible to atrial irritation and arrhythmias.

So far as erratic heart beats go, this probably leans a bit more on the benign side of things, depending on how the ventricles respond to the faster atrial beats. In terms of overall conduction, there is no defect; that is, your heart rhythm is still orchestrated high above the level of the ventricle. It is not a rhythm that finds an alternate or dangerous circuitous electrical pathway. As such, treatment usually involves either reduction of your heart's response to the irritation (usually by common beta blockers) or if the valve's flow dynamics are serious enough, surgery.

So in terms of cardiac arhythmias, its low on the list of lethality. Speak to your doctor.

Yes - anybody could die of these conditions.

Mitral valve prolapse can give rise to pulmonary oedema and possibly even sudden cardiac arrest and death.

Arrhythmias are an irregular beating of the heart. Many arrhythmias are stable and people get by with or sometimes even without medication. However, some arrhythmias are life threatening.

I guess the more important questions are:

Are you likely to die from mitral valve prolapse or arrhythmia?

Do you have either of those conditions already?

Do you have risk factors for developing those conditions?

What should you be doing about this, and what ARE you doing about this?

"solid blood" would not mixture with "undesirable blood". The values have no longer something to do with that as the two factors of the heart are separate. With Mitral valve incompetence or prolapse, the valve would not close like it somewhat is assume to. that facilitates back bypass of blood. If undesirable adequate, the therapy is a valve alternative. With Mitral valve stenosis, the valve would not open like it somewhat is assume to. that forestalls bypass for the time of the valve. The therapy is a valve alternative or now and returned an undemanding cut back in the valve to alleviate the stenosis may be accomplished. the two way, if undesirable adequate, surgical treatment is mandatory, no longer pills.
