I try to reduce the amount of garbage I generate by buying stuff that's not overpackaged and spending a little extra time cooking. I try to reduce the amount of fuel used to transport my food by buying local and most of my local farmers are also organic! I compost my vegetable waste and recycle so I have about a grocery bag (or less) worth of "trash" a week. I save some money and energy with florescent bulbs, I've "shrink-wrapped" all my windows to keep in heat, keep my heater around 65 degrees and wear a sweater or extra blanket at night. I've got a plastic jug in my toilet to save water and I "let it mellow" without getting too gross. I'm not a total vegetarian but I eat a lot less meat than I used to, and I'm lucky enough to get free-range organic eggs and meat raised close by! I use biodegradable soaps and detergent. My beer is brewed about 2 blocks away too!
There's a lot more I could do: I love to go hiking and camping so there's the fuel used getting there that could be saved if I stayed home. I could hang my clothes up to dry outside but I like them toasty and fresh from the dryer. I leave the lights on sometimes when I'm at work to "establish presence". I don't have things plugged into power strips so my electronics and phone charger consume power just sitting there. I could find a way to recycle office paper from work. The list goes on but I'm working on it!
There's always more you can do. But I'm educating myself and trying to encourage others without being preachy. My goal is to learn how to build and design affordable sustainable housing so that a single mom like me could buy land and design her own house. Or a so-called 3rd world village could have solar and wind power without being slaves to corrupt governments. I'd like to get paid to help people save money and live sustainably basically.
I'm of the opinion that if you do something, anything, every bit helps! Thanks for asking!

For 30 years my work has been mainly related to the Environment ,and Eco tourism.
.
Until a few months ago i was a consultant for the department of Ecology for local Government in Mexico. )
I answer lots of questions here in Answers about Environmental issues and peddle responsible Environmental behavior.
And am involved into setting up a couple of schools for farmers about organic and sustainable farming.
Up to 7 years ago in Africa i made many
gardens ,helped set up Eco tourist places ,and food gardens in a couple of very poor settlements for Africans
Mexico Oaxaca lived with the Mazateca Indians made some gardens ,including one in a school.and lectured on preserving their trees
5 years ago started a Park with the help of about 2000 school kids and parents,in the Sierra above Acapulco
Last year,i was at the river with a bunch of school kids and putting up boards to forbid dumping rubbish and cleaning up a part of the river side.
Sometimes I talk to schools about ecological awareness , have so far had more than 3000 visitors of school kids alone in my garden, not counting adults
To farmers i talk about ,harmful farming practices, give alternatives that are sustainable ,and lecture on the importance of trees and soil management ,erosion,Aquaculture ,niches ,companion planting, water harvesting etc.
Last year we motivated all the schools to clean up the Town, and even the army lend a hand and we are about to do this again in a couple of weeks
Also, with all the fisher men and owners and families of the beach restaurants we cleaned up the Lagoon
and have planted many trees and made many gardens ,by now.

I do not eat meat. A little known fact is that not eating meat for a year can be as effective as not even riding in a car for a year with regards to carbon emissions. I am really disappointed that this has not even come up in popular debates.

recycle everything that you can, ride a motorcycle to save on gas, buy locally and organic foods, solar power, don't use chemicals to clean with at all, compost and don't use styrofoam.
