I was recently diagnosed with asthma, and to me it seems pretty bad! Is it normal to have pretty constant attacks, and to need the inhaler almost once every hour? I also wake up about 4 times a night needing it. Its extremely restricting and ANNOYING. Does anyone with asthma know if this is pretty normal? I'm trying to decide if I should go back to the doctor or if I just need to get used to this.

The amount of medication you are using means your asthma is not well controlled. You should see your doctor and tell her/him or go to the ER if you are using it once an hour. The fast acting inhaler can actually stop working for you if you use it too often (not long term but while you are having the attack). It can also be very dangerous for your heart if you are using it that often.

No. Not normal, well, yes, normal for asthma. I had it bad as a kid and would have terrible asthma attacks. GO TO THE DOCTOR. Get an inhaler, or even a ventilator. It's true, it can be deadly if it gets too out of control. But most likely not. Get it checked out though. They can give you this nebulizer deal that helps decrease the attacks. Just go to the doctor!

It is critical that you and your doctor look for the CAUSE of your asthma. I have developed asthma since I moved to Montana 10 years ago for the 'clean air'. Sadly, the constant wood smoke in the air causes my asthma. Additionally, I have an allergic reaction to fish, which also triggers my asthma. When I avoid smoke and fish - NO ASTHMA.

Find the cause. Treat the cause. DO NOT blame the label for your symptoms (the label is 'asthma') for the cause of your symptoms. If your doctor is too lazy or too drug-oriented to help you properly treat your condition, look for a better doctor (e.g. M.D.'s trained in Environmental Medicine or Functional Medicine, Naturopathic Physicians or your family Chiropractor).

Best wishes and good luck.

No, that is def. not good. you should go to the doctor. they'll prob. give u a steroid anti-inflammatory inhaler meant for everyday use to solve the route of the problem, and then I'm sure ull be fine. then u wont need ur fast acting inhaler nearly as often. i have asthma i take asmanex and singulair everyday. works great. if u call your doctor he/she may perscrib you something over the phone so you dont have to go back
